Master Bedroom Night Stand Makeover

This master bedroom night stand makeover was a great budget project! See how I transformed hotel nightstands and gave them an expensive look!

Back in January (how was it that long ago?) I shared the plan for giving our master bedroom a budget makeover. One of the first projects I wanted to tackle, and to free up space in our garage, was giving the set of night stands I picked up on Facebook Marketplace last year a makeover.

I randomly check our Facebook Marketplace, but I generally always see something good. These nightstands were in the exact shape I was looking for, and I’m pretty sure they were made for a hotel. Priced at $25 each, and in great shape, we jumped on them. I knew they could be something good, and I was right.

I went back to my roots on this project, and I have to say, it was incredibly refreshing to bust out my paint brush and paint furniture. Therapeutic even. And, I have to say, fast.

Since the nightstands were in really good shape, I didn’t have any prep work. I also didn’t need to do any sanding to the original finish thanks to this chalk paint. I used their outdoor paint, but it’s great for inside use too.

I started by wiping them down, then used a foam roller and paint brush to start applying the paint…

Coverage was great with two coats, but I added a third just to make sure the original red finish was covered.

I also switched out the hardware. I filled the holes, sanded them down until they were smooth, and then we added these brass mushroom knobs. I love them, and they’re inexpensive.

To give the paint a protective finish, I applied a layer of clear wax. Wax always makes the color so much deeper and in the case of this black paint, it makes the color the perfect black…

Once I had the wax applied, the night stands were ready for new hardware…

And with that, we moved them upstairs into our bedroom…

They have made such a huge improvement to our room…

The black paint and new knobs completely transformed these hotel nightstands…

I wanted the budget price of a high end nightstand I’ve loved for a long time, and even though these are different in size and shape, they give me the same look I wanted…

If you’re a long time blog follower, you may even recognize my DIY concrete lamps. I still love them and they look perfect with these nightstands! I just updated the lamp shade and they look refreshed…

Next on our list (and now that the fabric has finally arrived), we can make our headboard. I’m really looking forward to this project… that will be the next big transforming addition to our bedroom. I can’t wait to get started!

  1. Fabulous! We have a bedroom set in good condition, but we’re soooo done with the color. Somehow I never thought to paint it black! So pretty.

How many quarts did it take to get that level of coverage on your nightstands?

    1. Thank you so much, Corrie! Sounds like it’s time to paint! I used less than half a quart on these nightstands. The paint does go a long way, but depending on the size of your bedroom set, you may need to get a few quarts for complete coverage. I hope that helps! 🙂

  2. These are amazingly beautiful and probably better quality than you could have purchased. Your link is to a 4oz sample. How much paint did you actually use? And what wax did you use too? Thanks so much.

  3. Hi Shayna – you did a great job on those nightstands! They do indeed look high end.

Just a head’s up: your link to the inspirational high end night stand linked us to your awesome brass knobs. Thought you’d like to know.

    Have a blessed weekend.

    1. Thank you so much, Helen! Unfortunately, these night stands are currently in storage and I can’t take measurements. My off hand guess is that they are about 36″ long and 18″-20″ deep. I’m sorry that’s not more helpful!
