DIY Wood Planked Pantry Door

Hi there! A while back I mentioned that I had a few ideas to spruce up our pantry door since I  had just painted our mudroom door black. And since they’re both in the same small room, I didn’t feel like we’d need two accent doors.

Long story short, I told Anthony about my idea for the new pantry door and he was all for it. Turns out he really didn’t like color of our previous pantry door, at all. So today I’m sharing one of our latest projects, our DIY wood planked pantry door, which I shared a sneak peek of in our summer home tour.

Supplies:

We started with a basic flat panel door…

Then, we marked the spots for the hinges…

Anthony used a router to notch them out…

Then we set the hinge in place…

And screwed it in…

Once all the hinges were on, we trimmed the door to fit vertically in our existing door jam…

Then Anthony started measuring an equal spacing for the planks…

For the planks, we use 1/4″ flooring underlayment, just like we did on our office plank wall. It comes as a 4″ x 8″ sheet and we use our table saw to rip them down to 5 1/2″ wide…

We started in the middle with our first plank…

And to secure it to the door, we squeezed wood glue on the back of the plank…

Then used our nail gun to secure them in place…

For equal spacing, we used nickels…

Once we had the other planks in place, we started on the hole for the door knob. Anthony measured the hole, then drew a circle…

He used the router to cut it out…

Then, we glued and nailed the plank in place…

We also had to notch around the hinges in order for the plank to fit…

Once all the planks were secured in place, we were left with this…

We hung it back up with the existing hinges…

Then, I started filling and sanding the nail holes…

After I wiped down the door, I gave it three coats of Super White by Benjamin Moore…

And I added the previous door handle…

With that, it was ready to use!

I am so thrilled with how it turned out! I love that it’s a bit different from the other doors, but still blends in…

Plus, I knew it would look simply fabulous with a big wreath and chalkboard pantry sign

It’s one of the first things you see when you look into the hallway from our kitchen, so I’m happy to have a bit of plank good-ness in that area…

Now, I’m on the hunt for a unique door knob to pull everything together…

  2. It looks beautiful, seemed to be pretty easy and I would do this for all my doors in my hallway! With that I have to say that it’s sooo beautiful, it needs a really special door knob! Love all your posts! 😀

  3. Perfect…. as usual! You and Anthony are a fabulous team…. I am so impressed with your ideas and ability to pull it all together, all the time! Looks beautiful!

  4. I love it!! What a great idea! I am wanting to do a plank look wall in our open concept family/kitchen/dining room. Just a little contrast makes such a difference and gives some great interest to your little hallway. Your paint color looks similar to ours,,,is it Grey Owl by Benjamin Moore? Happy summer days to you!

  5. Great project, love the white planks. They bring an extra texture to the room.
Did you make the cotton wreath?

  6. Hi Shayna! I just love this (and the new knob you put on after, swoon!) and we’d love to feature you on Remodelaholic. I just emailed you, but I wanted to comment, too, just in case my email doesn’t come through. Drop me a line at this email and we can discuss the details of being featured. Thanks!

  7. Did you have to change the door stop trim on the frame of the door once you installed the wood to the door? This is a great upgrade, and I have these doors throughout my whole house and would love to do this. I was wondering if the door had a problem fitting once the wood was added.

    1. Hi Suzanne! Thank you so much! We didn’t have to change anything with the actual door frame, we just made sure the material we used to cover the door was thin enough to work with what we had. The door fits perfectly. I hope this helps! 🙂
