TGI-FRIDAY: A Home Office Update & So Much More by The Wood Grain Cottage

TGI-FRIDAY: A Home Office Update & So Much More

September 6, 2019

It's time for another TGI-Friday, and this week I'm including a home office update. Honestly, since we've been knee deep in exterior projects, we haven't made a ton of progress, but that's about to change! A little while back, I shared the design plan for the office. We've been buying several of the items, and I can't wait to start putting the room together. One of the big key factors, is going to be getting the closet shelves finished. Right now, it's basically just full of boxes making the room hard to organize. We also need to buy a small filing cabinet, because as much as we've been able to go paperless, there's still papers that need to be kept and filed.  I did get the ...

Office Design Plan by The Wood Grain Cottage

Office Design Plan

July 25, 2019

It's hard to believe a month ago the room for our office was stacked full of boxes. We couldn't even walk around in there. Every day I'd walk by completely overwhelmed and frustrated with not being able to find certain things we'd be looking for. As soon as I knew I'd be back to blogging again, putting the office together became a priority.  So today, I'm sharing the office design plan and I'm so excited to see it come together! Affiliate links are provided below. Full disclosure here.  Since Todd and I will both be using the office, I wanted it to be a nice balance of feminine and masculine... but we all know how much I love black paint and furniture. It wasn't really a ...

How To Organize Desk Drawers... The Cheap Way by The Wood Grain Cottage

How To Organize Desk Drawers

April 5, 2017

We're back to the office today, and I'm sharing all about how to organize desk drawers. I desperately needed the desk and drawer space, but I wanted the space to work for me, not against me. In the past, it seems like my drawers always stay organized at first, but over time things slide out of place as the drawers open and close, or as new items are added. It was time to find a solution that would work for the long term.  And let me preface this by saying, that I'm not one of those people who need every single space to be gorgeous and "magazine worthy". That's definitely not the case here, I just want the space to remain organized and tidy. The cheaper I can accomplish that, ...

DIY Leather Pulls by The Wood Grain Cottage

DIY Leather Pulls

March 21, 2017

Want to make your own DIY Leather Pulls? See our full tutorial below and customize them to fit your space.  Cabinet hardware is always such a huge way of transforming a piece of furniture, or an entire space. Thing is though, cabinet hardware can be down right expensive. Lately, I've been loving all things leather, so when it came down to finalizing the cabinet hardware for the new office desk and filing cabinet, I couldn't stop myself from incorporating leather. So, we made our own DIY leather pulls! I honestly couldn't be more thrilled with how the pulls turned out, or how easy and budget friendly they were to make. Not kidding! DIY Leather Pulls Affiliate ...

Building Our Office Desk by The Wood Grain Cottage

The Office Desk: The Finishing Details

March 17, 2017

All week I've been sharing our tutorial on how we've built our new office desk, and today I'm sharing the last part, which is all about the finishing details. I couldn't be happier with how the office desk has turned out. It solves so many of our past office issues just by providing a bigger work space and more storage options... both of which we desperately needed. Here's the final installment on how we built the desk... When we left off earlier this week, I shared how we installed the countertop portion of the desk... After the countertop was installed, we had a few projects left to make the desk look "finished". You can see from the picture above that our filing cabinet ...

The Office Desk: The Countertop

March 15, 2017

Since the tutorial for our office desk is pretty lengthy, I decided to break it up into a few different parts. On Monday, I shared how we built the base, making a riser for the filing cabinet and determining the overall height of the desk. Today, we're talking about how we chose, and attached the countertop for the office desk.  Here's where we basically left off: We decided to remove the actual "top" of the Ikea dressers, which created a more seamless look for the desk, and we built a riser for the filing cabinet, which made everything the same height for the countertop... For the actual countertop, here's what we bought: 2- Ikea Saljan Counterops, in white, at ...

The Office Desk: The Base

March 13, 2017

When we began the design process for the office, I wanted to make sure I'd have plenty of work space, as well as storage. The best way to do that, was to maximize the room by having the desk run along two of the walls, giving me plenty of work space. Because this is a pretty lengthy tutorial, I'll be sharing how we installed the office desk throughout the week, but today it's all about the base. As I mentioned above, and in this post, I really needed to have ample storage space for both office supplies and files. The base of the office desk needed to be a work horse too, and that's why we decided on using two IKEA dressers, plus a lateral filing cabinet. Here's what we used for the ...

Chair Options For The Office by The Wood Grain Cottage

Let’s Talk Office Chairs

March 7, 2017

We're getting close to actually finishing up our office, and now we're down to the point of putting in all the finishing touches that will really take this room to the next level. I still have a few tutorials to share, like the actual desk area, our DIY leather hardware and a few other things, but while I wrap up all of those details, let's talk office chairs, because it's still a big unknown. Deciding on an office chair has easily been one of my biggest hang ups for the room, and I really don't want to settle on a chair that isn't right for the space, or comfortable enough for me to actually want to sit and work for long periods of time. I have that problem now with our ...

The Office Shelves by The Wood Grain Cottage

The Office Shelves

March 3, 2017

When I was designing the space for the office, one of my major focuses, was making sure we had plenty of storage space. Our current office lacks in that area, and it seemed papers, projects, tools and office supplies were stacking up in every corner. I tried so hard to manage the chaos, but without a place for everything to go, it basically took over the room. I swore that wasn't going to happen in our new office, so I made sure to add plenty of storage space. Here's how we added the office shelves... I had originally thought that we'd build our own floating shelves for the room, and I was going to have them be a little bit thicker than what we ended up doing, but because we changed ...

The Office Blinds by The Wood Grain Cottage

The Office Blinds

March 1, 2017

We were able to make some great progress in the office these past few days and everything is officially coming together. I'm looking forward to being able to make the big office swap and start transferring all of my items over into the new space soon! It's very exciting... and that means we'll be sharing plenty of new tutorials and updates all about our new home office and how we're going to use the space. But today, it's all about the office blinds. When we started making over the room, the office had cheap blinds that we'd originally hung up right after we built the house and moved in. They weren't anything special, and they weren't quite what I was envisioning for the new space. New ...

Favorite Wall Lights From Amazon Under $90 by The Wood Grain Cottage

Wall Lighting For The Office

February 21, 2017

Lots of glorious progress is happening in the new office. Anthony and I have been spending any spare time we can muster trying to finish this room before farming takes over and he's too busy to help finish our list of projects. And we really need to finish this room so the other original office can be completely cleaned out and turned into the new guest room space. The mess has to end at some point, right? But since we have been making a good deal of progress in the room, I'm starting to focus my attention on the finishing elements of the space. Right now, my brain is all locked in on wall lighting for the office. I originally shared my vision for the office lighting in this mood board, ...

DIY Closet Door Tutorial For Our Home Office

January 26, 2017

I'm sharing our DIY closet door tutorial for our home office. See our full, step by step DIY tutorial and how these closet doors transformed our space.  I'm back today with another update on our home office... the closet doors! When we started converting the guest bedroom into our home office, I knew the closet doors would need some help. When we built the house a few years ago, we didn't want to spend any extra money on fancy closet doors. We didn't really have it in the budget, but knew we'd update them when the time came. So today I'm sharing our DIY closet door tutorial for our home office. The difference in unreal! Before I share the tutorial on how we built them, let's ...

New Trim In The Office by The Wood Grain Cottage

New Office Window Trim

January 20, 2017

When we first started talking about moving the office into the guest bedroom, one of the first projects I wanted to tackle, was trimming out the two windows. When we built the house a few years ago, we didn't have extra money in the budget to trim out each and every window, so we opted to do round bull nose corners with a simple window ledge. Lately, I've wanted to start transitioning them over to something more custom looking, and the office was the perfect room to start, especially since we did the awesome grid board and batten walls. And because we wanted the walls and window trim to flow seamlessly, we actually started with the window trim first. Here's how we transformed our ...

DIY Grid Boad & Batten Walls by The Wood Grain Cottage

Grid Board & Batten In The Office

January 16, 2017

Ready to add interest to your walls? We recently added grid board and batten in the office and I'm sharing our full tutorial! Our new office space is coming together beautifully, but when we started with the blank and bare guest room (read more about the room switch here), I knew I wanted something to help transform the space. I wanted something different. I wanted a place where I would feel inspired to work everyday. I wanted to feel cozy and warm and welcomed. Adding grid board & batten in the office did just that, and paved the way for everything else we'll be adding and creating for the room... From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to do some sort of a wall treatment, ...

Office Mood Board by The Wood Grain Cottage

Home Office Mood Board & Design Plan

January 11, 2017

Just a few days ago, I spilled the details on our first big project of the new year. And when I say it's a big project, I mean it. It's basically an entire room makeover from start to finish. Every single element in the room is being added fresh, which makes this an exciting project! Starting from scratch allows me to really nail down exactly what the room will look like, and how it will function- an important element for our new office. I need it to function well, it's a necessity. Today, I wanted to share our mood board for our new home office, and the overall design of the space. We've already begun the process and I'm excited to say everything is looking amazing, and this room is ...

Creating Our New Home Office by The Wood Grain Cottage

Creating Our New Home Office

January 9, 2017

Happy New Year! I didn't intend to take last week off, but we've been so very busy working on new projects, I didn't want to over extend myself by trying to get the blog caught up with new posts. Slacker blogger, I know. Lots of new stuff to come though, I can promise you that! I have big plans for the new year. I have high expectations. 2016... wasn't great. It was tough in several ways and I very much was looking forward to a fresh, clean slate. Anthony and I have been prioritizing several areas in our home that need to function and work better for us. At the top of the list, our home office. If you're a long time reader, you know I've been working on our office, or trying to work on it ...

Makeover Week: The Room Sources

April 1, 2016

Thank you so very much for all of your sweet comments on my mom's office makeover! I love how it turned out too!  Today, on our last day of makeover week, I wanted to share the room sources. Several of the things I used in my mom's room were things she already owned, but several items were not. My dad gave me a budget of $400 for the room, and I used all of that, with the majority going to the new dresser. I did find a few little things to help add to what she already had.  So, let's talk sources!  Please note: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, which allows us to make a small commission from your purchase, but your purchase price stays the ...

Makeover Week: The Reveal

March 31, 2016

Oh my goodness! Today I am sharing the reveal of makeover week! When my mom and dad initially told us they were going on vacation, and then when my mom purchased some new office furniture, I really, really, really wanted to give their office a makeover.... as a surprise! My mom sells real estate and is always so busy. I knew she'd get home from vacation and hit the ground running to catch up... finishing the office would take a back seat. I also knew she'd be stressing about finishing her office, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. My dad gave me a $400 budget and I went shopping for the last few things I knew the room would need to finish it off. Before my mom left, ...

Makeover Week: Updating The Old Closet Doors & More!

March 30, 2016

We're moving right along with makeover week. Yesterday, I shared how we planked the walls and ceiling. Just by doing that, the room looks entirely different. You all know I'm a big fan of plank walls, so I was thrilled when my mom chose that element for her office.  Before my mom left on vacation, I had mentioned to her that it would be pretty awesome to frame out her existing old closet doors. They needed something, be that completely replaced with new doors, painted or modified. She didn't really have a preference, so I chose once she was gone. I knew the existing doors could look amazing with a little bit of new trim work and paint, so that's what we did. :) Let's talk about ...

Makeover Week: Planking The Walls & Ceiling

March 29, 2016

The first thing we did as part of my mom's office makeover, was start planking the walls and ceiling. My mom picked out this part of the room makeover, and I have to say, she chose right! Before she left for vacation, we discussed the different options for the room, but she really liked the idea of planking a few of the walls. She also wanted to install beadboard or planking on the ceiling, mainly because, for whatever reason, the ceiling in my old bedroom really rippled across the whole room. I'll show you what I mean a little bit further down the post.  To get started on the walls, we removed all of the existing trim. My mom had previous (a few years ago) had all of her windows ...

Huge Office Picture with Custom Frame

October 17, 2014

I promise, we are still working on our home office. Honestly, I haven't wanted to just "bust it out" and be done, because rushing though it would mean that I, rushed through it. And while it may work at the time, will it last the long haul? So, I've been taking my time. Adding things that make sense, and removing the things that don't. And that takes time. A few months ago I contacted my lovely friend, Jenna Sue at Jenna Sue Designs. I knew exactly what I wanted to add to our office. I wanted a bit of personal meaning in a space that I seem to be spending more and more and more time in. I sent her the picture, and she printed it out... You might just recognize the tree from the ...
