Why I Love To Add A Basket To My Kitchen Countertop

See why I love to add a basket to my kitchen countertop and why you should too! This easy decorating item adds so much character to your kitchen!

There are a few simple things I like to repeat and then repeat again when it comes to decorating. They just work, and no matter the house or the space I’m trying to freshen up, I tend to turn to my tried and true things over and over.

Why re-invent the wheel if you don’t have too, right?

Over time, I’ve found that I really love to add a basket to my kitchen countertop. It’s an easy decor element, but it also makes a big impact. No matter what home we live in, you’ll find one sitting on my countertop.

Why I Love To Add A Basket To My Kitchen Countertop

Not only does a basket look pretty, but it serves a big purpose too, which is always important to me whenever I think about adding decor items to purposeful spaces.

The kitchen countertops can be a sacred space, sometimes with little room to spare. That was definitely the case in our Willow House kitchen. If there’s an item taking up space, it can’t just look pretty… it needs to be functional too! And that leads me to the kitchen countertop basket.

What Goes in my countertop basket?

The kitchen countertop basket is the perfect place to corral several items together, creating an easy, functional vignette. Like almost all baskets, the countertop basket gathers items together, making it easy to create a beautiful, functional centerpiece for your kitchen.

I love to gather every day things together and make them as beautiful as possible and using a basket makes this so easy!

Most often, inside the basket you’ll find a few of my favorite cookbooks. I love to keep them handy and when it’s something I’m always using, it only makes sense to make them a staple piece in my basket.

I’m also known to have hand-written recipe cards floating around and this is an easy place to keep them. I don’t have to worry about losing them, I just check in my basket.

And because I love recipe boxes, I often just keep mine right in there too.

I also love to keep fresh fruit out on the counter and in a pretty bowl or colander so if countertop space is limited, I’ll layer the fruit bowl in the basket too. There’s something home-y about fruit in a bowl and having that bowl in a basket makes it even more appealing to the eye.

It’s also easy to stack the bowl on top of, or to the side of the cookbooks making this a perfect way to display all those items that can take up counter space.

Another wonderful thing to add, is a bouquet of fresh tree branch clippings, or flowers. I like to include a small vase or pitcher and keep it filled with fresh clippings.

And of course, this is just the beginning of what you can keep in your basket. In my mind, this is a great way to elevate your kitchen with the every day items we use on a regular basis!

Where do I put my countertop basket?

This is the beautiful thing about them… they can go anywhere on your kitchen counters!

Here are a few different ideas to get you started:

  • Anywhere you have space to put fresh fruit, extra cookbooks, or a pretty bouquet.
  • Next to your stove to corral your every day spices, olive oil and cooking utensils.
  • Next to your coffee maker to keep sugar, mugs or coffee drinks handy.
  • On your kitchen island to hold a domed cake stand of your fresh baked goodies and extra plates/ napkins.
  • Next to your sink to organize dish cleaning items, paper towel stand, extra towels, your favorite candle and a beautiful block of soap.

The options really are endless! It’s so easy and the outcome is always beautiful!

The biggest thing I’ve found, is to find a shallow long or round basket that’s big enough to fit on your countertop (and to hold your goodies), while still giving you workable space and not completely taking up your kitchen counter.

I also love a basket with handles. It makes it easy to move it around, should you need to move it out of the way, but of course, this isn’t mandatory and there are so many beautiful baskets without handles!

Where do I find my countertop baskets?

I’ve been asked several times where I find these great baskets. I’ve had mine for many years, but I’ve rounded up a great collection right here.

And don’t forget, thrift stores are also a great place to look for these!
