Denim Blue Chair Makeover
I have this Aunt… she’s a pretty special lady. And she has a pretty special husband too. He happens to keep my wood stock full, and she happens to be a major supporter of the WGC.
A while back, I stumbled across a set of eight lovely cafe chairs. I absolutely loved their style and I knew their smaller size would be absolutely perfect for my Aunt’s kitchen. Since her kitchen is a bit on the smaller side, and she just ordered a new pedestal table, I knew they were the perfect chair for her!
Once she had them, we decided to give four of them a makeover. She loves denim blue, so she was instantly excited about covering the chair seats with denim fabric, and she really wanted the chair to be a dark blue/black. So that’s what we did.
She’s completely in love with them, and I’m completely happy to help since she’s such a big cheerleader of me and the blog.
Here’s what we started with…
Some of them were pretty beat up and the finish on several of them was really faded… Plus, she’s a big lover of color, so paint them we must!
After we gave them a good wipe down, and removed the seats, we started painting them with the DecoArt Chalky Finish paint in Relic.
The chairs were basically completely covered after one coat, but we added a second coat just to cover them completely.
Once the paint had dried, I started lightly distressing them to reveal a bit of the dark wood stain from the original finish…
After we wiped off any dust, I used the DecoArt Clear Creme wax…
While the chairs had a bit of time to cure, I started working on recovering the seats.
We cut a good size square of denim and ironed out the wrinkles…
Then placed the right side of the fabric face down…
And started stapling the fabric around the existing cushion…
I just kept pulling the fabric tight as I went along, being careful not to have any noticeable ripples on the sides…
Once I had it all stapled tight, I trimmed off the extra fabric…
And was left with a lovely denim seat…
Then, I just screwed the cushion back onto the chair.
After that, they were ready to use!
They’re exactly what my Aunt was wanting…
The denim fabric is perfect with the relic paint, and it definitely brings out the blue in the paint…
And all four chairs look fabulous together…
They’re going to be the perfect addition to her kitchen…
And I hear her pedestal table is ready and waiting for it’s new friends…
I’m just as excited as she is! These chairs are perfect, and as denim blue as I ever saw…
You can find the new Chalky Finish paint online at Home Depot! They have so many fun colors to choose from too! Happy Painting!

Good job, they are breath taking very nice. It still amazes me how you can take something old and put a little paint on it and bring life back to it. The wax that you put on them can you use any paint or dose it have to be the deco art.
THANK YOU so much, Clara! Paint is such an amazing thing! You could use any paint or wax, but I’ve found the DecoArt product to be very nice and cost effective! 😀

Hi I just came across your blog. I love it! We have such similar style. I am wondering where you found the denim fabric for these chairs? I have been on the hunt. Hope to hear back!
Thanks.
Thank you so much, Ashley! Welcome! I bought the denim at our local craft/ fabric store. I believe Jo-Ann’s has some similar material. I hope that helps! 🙂
