Wood Slab Sign
If you’ve been reading The WGC for awhile, you’ve probably noticed that I really love thick slabs of wood. There’s just something about them. They look great and they can be used in so many different ways.
Today, I’m showing another way I’m using them, as a Wood Slab Sign!
Be still my heart, because I am in love!
Here’s how I made it:
I started with this thick wood slab…
My awesome uncle delivers these to me whenever I ask. He cuts them with his chain saw off of a fallen aspen tree on his ranch. He’s truly awesome! He also brought me the wood that I turned into a serving tray and he lets me collect driftwood anytime I need it for projects like this, this, or this. Awesome, I tell ya!
For the wording, I used my silhouette machine to create my saying, then cut it out on heavy card stock…
Once it was cut out, I measured and spaced the wording in the middle, then taped the edges to hold it in place…
I used a pencil and traced each letter…
Once I had all the words traced, I was left with this:
For the wording, I used the Minwax stain markers to fill in the words…
Since I love the provincial color, I used that…
With all the words filled in, this is what I was left with:
It’s such a fun piece to have around the house and I’m already trying to decide which room to put it in.
I love that it still lets the wood shine through…
And the bark on the outer edge makes me happy! This is definitely authentic!
The stained letters also make me really excited, just look at ’em!
I could have painted them instead of staining them, but I love how the stained words gives the wood another depth…
Plus, they tie in with the outer ring of the bark…
Like I said, be still my heart!
And the wording couldn’t be more perfect, because home is my happy place…
I can see so many other fabulous things to stain on the wood. From address numbers, to initials, or anniversary dates this is the perfect touch for any room! My head is spinning with ideas!
I’m thinking it’s going to find its way into our office, but I can’t make any promises!
I Love it! I have a thing for wood slabs, beach-wood and trees of any kind, my boys think i’m nuts but I can’t help it! My dad made a 3 ft round slab of a tree into an address marker for my grandmother and it was beautiful! Keep all these great ideas coming, i’m loving all of them Shayna!
THANK YOU so much, Amy! I have a thing for wood slabs too! I totally don’t think you’re nuts! And I bet the tree slab address marker was absolutely amazing! 😀

I absolutely love the wood slab using the aspen. I’m from MO so not sure where I could find any.
Yay!!! I bought this at the craft show!!! Omg I love it so much! Thanks again maam 🙂
I use slabs to put under pots in my yard. I have used one on top of a stump that was too close to the ground to be anything but a hazard to trip over. I put a slab on top of it, leveled it with some small stones, then put a large shallow planter on it. I get lots of compliments and no one trips on the stump.
Love this sign! I am going to make one for a dear friend of mine for her cabin at the lake!
How many pens did you have to use for the lettering?
Thanks for sharing your creativity!
Karen
Thank you so much, Karen! I only used one pen for the lettering! 🙂
LOVE this and “wood” (😂) go with my whole house decor! I have a slab that’s about 300lbs that’s huge I basically wanted to do this to but was going to use a wood burner due to where I want to use it. I wanted to put either our initial made extra large on it or our last name and put it at the beginning of our driveway. I 1st got it to use for my outdoor wedding as a pedestal type thing for my husband and I to step up on to say our vows under the archway…time ran out as well as it taking too many men to get it moved to where I wanted it. I have an uncle exactly like yours, he’s 73yo and does 300 set ups/pull ups/push ups each when his feet hit the floor in the morning (300 push ups in less than 5mins😮 needless to say he’s in better shape than me at half his age!) I love him like a dad and I’ve always been his “daughter” having never been married and has never had children. He’s awesome too! Glad you have that too. Love your blog and hope you’re heaped blessings upon.
