Master Bedroom Budget Makeover Plan
Is your bedroom lacking some style? Ours too! Below I’m sharing our master bedroom budget makeover plan that includes several affordable options to create a space we love!
We’ve been hitting our 2021 house goals hard these last couple of weeks with hopes we can knock several lingering items off of our to do list. (I’m looking at you trim & closet doors.) With most of the big, main area projects nearing completion, it’s time to start really transforming several of our spaces by giving them a proper makeover.
It’s one thing to add new windows, paint, flooring and trim work, but it’s a completely different thing to start bringing in personality and making those spaces our own. It’s almost like the foundation has been laid, and now it’s time to start creating areas we want to spend time in… which leads me to our master bedroom… It’s a pretty blank space devoid of any real style. The day we moved in and put furniture in the room was really the last time we put any effort into the layout. I don’t know about your moving days, but ours are filled with comments like, “Just put that there and grab another box”.
Up until now, we’ve had so many other projects calling our attention, our master bedroom hasn’t really been on the radar… except for finishing the trim and adding closet doors. But now that we’re nearing completion on that to-do list item, I’m getting out of my tunnel vision and recognizing just how bad our bedroom really is. It’s time to fix that!
Master Bedroom Budget Makeover Plan
Over the last month or so, I’ve been working on the design plan for our bedroom and building a budget to help us create the space we want, while still being reasonable on how much it’s all going to cost. We still have other house projects to finish, and the last thing I want to do, is drop thousands of dollars on our bedroom furniture and accessories only to have that be the reason we can’t remodel other rooms, like our downstairs bathroom and living room.
After browsing around and seeing what I wanted to do, I gave myself a budget of $800 to makeover our bedroom. That sounds like a lot when you say it, but in reality, I’m going to need to get creative in a few areas, like new furniture and bedding. Those elements add up really fast and could easily eat up most of my $800 budget.
Here’s the design plan:

Finish Trim Work
We’ve already got a good start on finishing this project, but finishing our trim work, adding closet doors and painting all of it is going to go such a long way! We’re beyond ready to have this project completed and off of our to-do list.
New Bedding
Our bedding needs some work. Last year we bought a cheap set of sheets to tide us over and the year before that we bought a nice down comforter. That basically completes our existing bedding and I’m looking forward to treating ourselves to some new blankets, sheets and a duvet cover. I’ve had my eye on this linen quilt from Pottery Barn for years, and while it won’t work for the budget I’ve set, I have found some really good dupes I’m excited to use instead! As well as adding a new quilt, I’ll be adding new sheets, a duvet cover, new pillow covers, a bedskirt, and lots of pillows!
New Headboard
Perhaps one of the elements I’m most excited about, is building our new headboard! We don’t currently have a headboard and I’ve wanted to add one for a very long time. I’ve sketched out what I want, we’ve bought the supplies and now it’s time to start building the statement piece of our bedroom! I’m looking forward to seeing this project come to life and I’ll be sharing my step by step tutorial when it’s finished!
New Night Stands & Dresser
This is definitely one of our problem areas I can’t wait to solve! Our current night stands are too small, leaving the top cluttered and packed with items we use and need easy access to. Last year I found a pair of night stands on Facebook Marketplace and I loved how much potential they had. I’ll be giving them a makeover, as well as the dresser Todd grabbed for me from his shop. It’s in rough shape, but it has beautiful character and will make for a great makeover! It’s also larger than our current dresser, giving us more storage space. Win, win!
Updated Lighting
I love the lamps I gave a makeover to several years ago, but they need new lampshades to give them a fresh look. An easy fix that will go a long way!
Artwork
Our bare walls need character too! Last year I found a set of digital prints I loved and I’ve been waiting to use them in our bedroom. I also have a few other art projects I’m excited to try!
I can’t wait to see it all come together and we’ll be working on it over the next month, documenting our progress and sharing it all on the blog! With our master bathroom basically done, we’re looking forward to having a project-free master bedroom too! More to come soon!
Sometimes it seems the smallest details take the longest to finish and make the biggest difference, home stretch.
Yes! We are getting there! 🙂
I can’t wait to see what you do. I’m waaaaay older than you and finally ordered my first ‘grown up’ bed. That was my splurge so now I’m going to DIY everything else. I’ll be following along!
I can’t wait to see it all come together! Big congrats on your ‘grown up bed’! That’s exciting, no matter the age! Our bedrooms always seem to take a back seat to everything else! Excited to see our space come together! 🙂
Can’t wait to following along to see your bedroom come to life.
Thank you! I’m looking forward to it too! 🙂
