Installing & Painting Our Interior Doors
Let’s just take a minute to celebrate the accomplishment of installing and painting our interior doors! It’s been a long road getting here, but it’s such a sweet victory in having every single interior door installed! Let me just tell you, you’ll never fully appreciate the function and beauty of a door until you’ve lived without them for nearly a year! Yes, a year!
When choosing our interior doors, I knew I wanted something a little more traditional in style, but we also didn’t want to order custom doors. We found our door style in stock at Lowes, and since we’ve slowly been adding them to each room for the last year or so, it worked best for us to be able to buy them when we needed them and when we knew we had the time reserved to install them.
In full disclosure, I still have three doors left to paint and install door hardware on, but because my belly is growing every day, we’ve decided to make the job easier on me and spray them in one swift motion with our paint sprayer rather than me rolling each door. It’s a time and energy saver. 🙂
Now that we have the doors installed, we’ve been working on installing all the missing trim throughout the house. We’ve made great progress, and only have a few areas where it intersects our stairs. We still need to install the new stair treads, so until that’s done, we have a few places where the trim will have to wait.
Installing The Doors:
I must say, Todd did a great job installing the doors. He hadn’t ever installed one before, and it was fun to watch him learn a new skill and have the task mastered by the end of the project.
I didn’t take too many pictures of the process, but he basically trimmed the door height to fit the door opening and then used shims to keep the door level before nailing it place…
He worked his way through the house, adding the doors and then also installing trim on both sides so we could continue installing our base trim…
Little by little, the house started coming together…
Painting The Doors:
Once he had the doors and trim installed, it was my turn to caulk and paint…
I went back and forth between doing a contrasting color for the doors, but ended up choosing my favorite white color since it fit better into my overall plan for the house. I painted the doors Super White by Benjamin Moore in semi-gloss. It’s such a true, bright white and I love how fresh it makes the house feel.
Once I had the doors painted, the house instantly felt so much brighter….
I must say, the door hardware is my favorite…
We went with a more classic looking knob and they really look fabulous with the doors…
At some point, we plan on switching out all the brushed nickel hinges, but we have other priorities right now so that task will wait. In the mean time, we’re loving how much more finished the house is looking…

One project at a time, this house is coming together. Once we get a few of the larger, more important projects finished, I’m looking forward to making this hallway a little more interesting and a little less… meh. Of course, just adding base trim and trimming out the attic access will help.
What’s our next big project so we can finish installing the missing base trim? Giving the current stair treads a makeover! We have one or two other projects ahead of that one though, so I’ll be patiently waiting until we get there. Nevertheless, seeing all this progress is so much fun!
I love the new doors and hardware! May I ask the color of the paint on the walls?
Thank you! The walls are painted Gray Mist by Benjamin Moore in eggshell. 🙂
Doors and hardware look great! It’s amazing what a little black can do for a white door. You and Todd are doing a great job on your home.
Hi! Great post. I am about to paint my doors and am trying to figure out the best method.. Did you use a roller?
Hi there! 🙂 Yes, I did use a roller! The foam rollers are the best for doors. They give the smoothest finish. I use a high quality brush as well for the corners, and then go over them with the roller. I hope that helps! 🙂
