New Dining Room Curtains

A few months ago I had the idea of switching out our dining room curtains… and that was a big thing, considering I originally made them as one of my very first sewing projects. But time changes things, and I was ready for a switch… and since curtains have super magical powers (really and truly), I thought why not swap them out for something different?

But the thing was, I wasn’t completely, 100% sure on exactly what I wanted to switch them out to… So, I removed the curtains and rod all together…

And I kind of liked it bare, but again, I wasn’t completely sure about it staying that way… Just call me indecisive Nellie.

The other problem I kept running into, was the length of our curtains. When we originally hung the blinds and curtains in our home, we hung them high, which was the right thing to do (curtains always need to be higher and wider than the actual window for maximum impact), but it also makes finding curtains panels at such a long length really hard. They’re either the perfect length and crazy expensive, or they’re the perfect curtain and too short. It’s a battle I’ve been playing for years. Thus, we have IKEA curtains all over our house because they have the perfect long length curtains at a fraction of the cost!

Write that little tip down, or store it somewhere you’ll remember. IKEA has major money saving deals on curtains.

So, I decided to go the IKEA route, which also meant the cheap route. But, let me preface that by saying their curtains are not cheap on quality, nor are their curtain rods. I highly recommend you purchase their curtain rods if you are in the market for an excellent quality rod that is crazy inexpensive.

Write that little tip down too.

As luck may have it, the curtain rod and the curtains were actually available for online shipping, unlike so many of their items, so I went ahead and ordered them. We finally got them hung up, and I was so excited for the change.

And while I do really like them, I’m not 100% sure about them… yet. I go back and forth. Some days I really, really like them, and other days I think they’re out of place.

My other issue with them, is that when the afternoon light comes in, the room feels really green because of the paint color. It never really felt that way to me before, and I’m thinking the blue curtains must have provided just enough balance, while the white curtains are reflecting it.

We shall see what I think… I haven’t completely ruled out either painting the room, or switching curtains. Paint is the cheaper way to go, but I’m not crazy over the thought of painting around our dining room shelving.

Another fun adventure in the name of decorating. 🙂

  1. I love the white! Maybe you could do a little diy and add a band or accent in blue around the edge? I am thinking about these in my guest room since my go-to for long curtains (Pottery Barn) just stopped making them in the 108″ length! Crazy 🙁 I am a fan of patterned curtains usually but the white looks so nice in your space with all the neutral accents!

  2. Sometimes I wish (silly reason) that we weren’t disabled and must be satisfied with what is good enough. I style in bright colors. But there are times I do want plain white drapes (a couple Christmasses ago I turned them around so the liner showed–not bad in winter and used old white sheets and quilts to cover furniture temporarily. But I know that feeling. And I know how paint changes color. I think my painter did not use any formula my daughter and I had worked so hard in choosing. But ask around if others see the green. Is it a big big deal??? Can you live with it at all?? It would save yourself a step by not painting!! See if anything ne else sees the green too. If not it may just be your sensitivity. Or repaint in a totally not shade of what you have now. Nows your chance!!! Don’t be discouraged. All looks greatso far. ❤️

  3. I just got two sets of the same curtains and put one set in my dining room (just hung them today)!

  4. Shayna I love both curtained looks. Warmer and gives a finished look. I know you love white in your home but the touch of blue is gorgeous too! As someone just said, give it some time before you paint. but yes to curtains!

  5. Ohhh, I love the blue and white curtains in your room! They make the space seem much bigger and it looks like a Pottery Barn ad. But…. I like the black curtain rod better. 🙂 Still lovely though!

  6. I really like the Ikea curtains…you can always switch back and forth. And like Khadija, I like the black rods better. But I’m on to this black accent thing right now! lol!

  7. Give yourself time. The blue drapes are stunning in that room. I agree with the others – go with the black rod.

  8. I am
Obsessed! Which style of curtains and rod did you choose? May I please have the style or name Hun? So happy I found you on IG! Love love your home and your inspiring ideas! Have a blessed and beautiful day!

  9. Those blue curtains are fabulous…I’d live with those! Beautiful home. Smiles, Kathleen

  10. I love the new curtains! I think it gives the room a warm and welcoming feeling! You made a great choice! The pop of color really adds to the room! I enjoy all your decorating posts!

  11. I bought IKEA curtains a while back and I just recently discovered their rods! I could not believe how much cheaper they were even compared to the ‘decent priced’ rods I was previously looking at. I’m anxious to test them all out 🙂 I also agree with the ladies above, I like the black rod better!

  12. Given the two choices, I think I like the black rod better. It seems to tie the room together and pick up the black accents elsewhere. Maybe the new curtains don’t feel quite right because compared to all of the subtle bits of color throughout your house, they are a much bolder and stronger statement. There is greater contrast between the new pattern and other elements. Maybe a pattern that is subtler and somewhere in between the white and the bolder pattern. A cream background with wide, soft tan stripes or with thin tan stripes similar to grain sack cloth might be better. Maybe even a similar pattern to the curtains but in a softer, subtler color. Just some thoughts.

  13. I’m not so much a blue person but I love yours in the dining room! The white ones blended to much… I like the black rod too…what about a darker blind?

Whatever you choose…your home is gorgeous!!!

  14. I love white curtains, but in your dining room I really like the blue ones. Beautiful room.

  15. The older blue curtains look nice but I do think the white ones go so much better with the style of the rest of your house. The black curtain rod looks nice as well. The blue ones are pretty though! Maybe if you want to change things up every so often you could put them up again.. I have white gauzy curtains all over my house I bought from world market but some of them are in need of replacing! 6 kids and 2 cats will do that I guess! 🙂 We are starting a move and I will be heading to ikea for a few things so I will check out the curtains and rods while I’m there! 🙂 thanks for the tips!!
