All week I've been sharing our tutorial on how we've built our new office desk, and today I'm sharing the last part, which is all about the finishing details. I couldn't be happier with how the office desk has turned out. It solves so many of our past office issues just by providing a bigger work space and more storage options... both of which we desperately needed. Here's the final installment on how we built the desk... When we left off earlier this week, I shared how we installed the countertop portion of the desk... After the countertop was installed, we had a few projects left to make the desk look "finished". You can see from the picture above that our filing cabinet ... Read more
The Office Desk: The Countertop
Since the tutorial for our office desk is pretty lengthy, I decided to break it up into a few different parts. On Monday, I shared how we built the base, making a riser for the filing cabinet and determining the overall height of the desk. Today, we're talking about how we chose, and attached the countertop for the office desk. Here's where we basically left off: We decided to remove the actual "top" of the Ikea dressers, which created a more seamless look for the desk, and we built a riser for the filing cabinet, which made everything the same height for the countertop... For the actual countertop, here's what we bought: 2- Ikea Saljan Counterops, in white, at ... Read more
The Office Desk: The Base
When we began the design process for the office, I wanted to make sure I'd have plenty of work space, as well as storage. The best way to do that, was to maximize the room by having the desk run along two of the walls, giving me plenty of work space. Because this is a pretty lengthy tutorial, I'll be sharing how we installed the office desk throughout the week, but today it's all about the base. As I mentioned above, and in this post, I really needed to have ample storage space for both office supplies and files. The base of the office desk needed to be a work horse too, and that's why we decided on using two IKEA dressers, plus a lateral filing cabinet. Here's what we used for the ... Read more
Let’s Talk Office Chairs
We're getting close to actually finishing up our office, and now we're down to the point of putting in all the finishing touches that will really take this room to the next level. I still have a few tutorials to share, like the actual desk area, our DIY leather hardware and a few other things, but while I wrap up all of those details, let's talk office chairs, because it's still a big unknown. Deciding on an office chair has easily been one of my biggest hang ups for the room, and I really don't want to settle on a chair that isn't right for the space, or comfortable enough for me to actually want to sit and work for long periods of time. I have that problem now with our ... Read more
The Office Shelves
When I was designing the space for the office, one of my major focuses, was making sure we had plenty of storage space. Our current office lacks in that area, and it seemed papers, projects, tools and office supplies were stacking up in every corner. I tried so hard to manage the chaos, but without a place for everything to go, it basically took over the room. I swore that wasn't going to happen in our new office, so I made sure to add plenty of storage space. Here's how we added the office shelves... I had originally thought that we'd build our own floating shelves for the room, and I was going to have them be a little bit thicker than what we ended up doing, but because we changed ... Read more
The Office Blinds
We were able to make some great progress in the office these past few days and everything is officially coming together. I'm looking forward to being able to make the big office swap and start transferring all of my items over into the new space soon! It's very exciting... and that means we'll be sharing plenty of new tutorials and updates all about our new home office and how we're going to use the space. But today, it's all about the office blinds. When we started making over the room, the office had cheap blinds that we'd originally hung up right after we built the house and moved in. They weren't anything special, and they weren't quite what I was envisioning for the new space. New ... Read more

New Breakfast Nook Light
More details on our breakfast nook today! After we added the new stainless steel table to the room, I knew our old lantern style light had to go. It didn't fit the shape and style of the table, and it felt too small since the new table was much longer in size. And to be totally truthful, I'd been envisioning a different style light... Lighting makes such a huge difference, and I think it's often so under valued and appreciated. It's also really easy to update and transform a space just by adding a new light! Please note: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, which allows us to make a small commission from your purchase, but your purchase price stays the same. ... Read more
Wall Lighting For The Office
Lots of glorious progress is happening in the new office. Anthony and I have been spending any spare time we can muster trying to finish this room before farming takes over and he's too busy to help finish our list of projects. And we really need to finish this room so the other original office can be completely cleaned out and turned into the new guest room space. The mess has to end at some point, right? But since we have been making a good deal of progress in the room, I'm starting to focus my attention on the finishing elements of the space. Right now, my brain is all locked in on wall lighting for the office. I originally shared my vision for the office lighting in this mood board, ... Read more
Moody Dining Room Shelves
I know... I know... I left you hanging last week with the new dining room changes I made. That beautiful paint color has kind of changed everything! I'm beyond in love with the new color... we have moody dining room shelves now, and they're awesome! I'm still not entirely set on how they're styled, and they're guaranteed to change with time, but I did adjust how I displayed the items on the shelving. I have a lot of thoughts on our dining room... changes I'd like to make, a slight functionality change and the overall feeling in the room, but deciding on how I want to move forward with everything is a little ways off. In the mean time, it's still functioning just like before, except ... Read more
Breakfast Nook Chairs
When we brought in our new table to the breakfast nook from our the upstairs loft of our detached garage, I absolutely loved how the longer, slimmer table filled the space. Our breakfast nook has seen several different "looks" with different furniture. In the beginning, I included a dresser to help fill the space that our little table left to the left side of the room. Without anything there, the room felt a little bit empty, but as soon as we changed the table, everything in the breakfast nook changed. We instantly had a table that filled the main area of the breakfast nook, which I loved. The table is a little bit slimmer than most tables, so we were able to use the best amount of space ... Dining Room Changes
I'm pretty excited about today's post! I mentioned last week that I felt the house was feeling stale, and that I had some fresh ideas for a few different areas in the house. One of those rooms was the dining room. I've always loved our dining room. The shelves, the layout, all of it... but lately it's felt kinda dull to me. I knew the shelves were definitely staying, but I kept seeing a darker paint color behind them. I wanted to make the room pop, to have it feel a little more dramatic, and switch up the shelving display. Here's what we're looking at right now... like, this morning! I knew I wanted a dark paint. Something almost black, but not quite, and something that had clear ... Read more
Life Lately
I wanted to stop by today to share a little bit about life lately. We've been working on several things behind the scenes, and then other things (like office progress) have come to a halt... And all because Anthony and I both caught the nasty bug that's been going around. Anthony got it first, and then had sciatica problems which left him in severe pain. We were making trips to the chiropractor a few times a week to try and get him back up and running. He's always had back issues (and 4 knee surgeries!), so we had to get him back up and walking. He spent about a week down and out on the couch, poor guy, and I felt really, really bad for him. Just when he couldn't take it any longer, he ... Read more
New Breakfast Nook Table
Lately, our home has been feeling a little dull to me. Stale even. But... if there's one room in the house that is finally feeling and looking like I want it too, it's our breakfast nook. It's been quite the process, and there's been plenty of trial and error, but we've finally reached the point where I'm feeling excited and energized by the direction this little room is going! And it all started with our new breakfast nook table... For so long, the breakfast nook has felt stagnant to me... a bit dreary and lacking something... but I struggled to know exactly what it was. Every time I looked at the room, I felt like it was the table. We've had the old furniture in there for as long ... Read more
