Happy $30 Thursday and August 1st!
For this round of $30 Thursday, I decided to make some chicken wire baskets that are both functional and pretty.
And they make me happy.
They’re really easy to make… and cheap too!

I started with a basic roll of chicken wire. First, I rolled out the wire to my desired length and used a pair of metal wire cutters to snip it.
Be careful… it’s sharp. Gloves are recommended.
Then, I cut the corners of the wire with the chicken wire “grid”. I counted each “grid” and cut each side with the same amount.
I cut each side of the chicken wire, making sure to leave a bit of extra wire on every side. The extra wire will be needed to connect everything together.
I repeated the same thing on each side.
And was left with this:
Then, I folded over each side and used a yard stick to make sure all the sides were straight…
With the sides folded over, I used the extra bit of wire on each “grid” to attach all the sides together…
With all the sides attached, I shaped up the basket by pulling or flattening the wire where needed.
I pretty much love them…
And, they’re entirely versatile! Seriously.
I’ve had the dark brown basket for a while, but I had the idea of adding a chicken wire basket to the inside. I’m simply loving the way they look together.
It gives it that extra element of texture and color. It’s also a bit unexpected. And I love that.
The square basket also works perfect to hold dinner plates… and I didn’t even plan that! A happy coincidence!
The wire definitely wouldn’t be strong enough to support the plates on its own, but it’s that extra detail that makes all the difference.
These baskets are sooo simple to create…. but they look really fabulous…
And even though it’s August, and very much still summer around here, I absolutely had to include a bundle of our freshly harvested wheat.
I think I could look at this setting for a while…
The breakfast nook is a pretty happy place these days… and ready for a party!
And there ya have it!
But really, these baskets could be used anywhere. I’m pretty excited about the possibilities…. They would look fabulous in a bathroom stuffed with towels and wash cloths or used as a welcoming basket for guests. Or they could be used in the office or craft room to organize all those goodies. OR, you could simply just make them to hang on the wall.
Endless possibilities, I tell ya!
And in true $30 Thursday fashion, April and Jen have created amazing projects too!
April made this fabulous jewelry organizer… out of an old screen window…. say what? I love it!!

Cute, cute, cute! I particularly liked it used as a basket liner. It really shows up nicely against that brown basket.
I’ve got some terra cotta pots filled with houseplants outside right now, and I think I’m going to corral them in a chicken wire basket. 🙂
Thanks for presenting such an easy and inexpensive idea!!
