Combining Board & Batten With Planked Walls

I love this!! We have a similar layout in the new home we’re building and I can’t wait to add some texture like this. However, we don’t have a vault in our family room that is open to the kitchen and “sunroom/breakfast nook” . I totally envision the breakfast nook with planked walls (though we have a sliding door and lots of windows so won’t be a ton of full planks). The family room that joins it (just like the way yours does) has 9 ft ceilings but no vault, with a fireplace at one end, like where your tv sits in your room. I’m wondering how I’d do board and batten?? I don’t want to shorten the walls by doing only partway. I love the look of the cross piece your room has that breaks it up a bit, but that could shorten my room maybe? Hmmm. Guess I have some time to figure it out since the house isn’t done yet 🙂

Everything looks just beautiful! I’m curious (and I can’t tell from the photo) what did you do at the corner join? For example, where your foyer planked wall meets the board and batten living room wall. Did you cover it with quarter round? Simply paint the plank edge? Caulk?

Thanks for sharing your home. I always enjoy taking a look inside:)

Thank you so very much for this timely post! I’ve been searching for details about mixing wall treatments and your post is super helpful! I’m going to be planking a wall surrounding a fireplace and it will butt up to a hallway wall that I wanted to use board and batten on… Totally going to go for it now! Thanks 🙂

It has all come together beautifully – you have fantastic style and great creative vision – be very proud of what you have accomplished and created – which is, a warm, inviting and welcoming home!

I love your house. Can you guys come to mine and revamp it to look like that? lol You could be the new “Fixer Uppers.” Seriously. Just beautiful

What a timely post! We purchased a home earlier this year that desperately needs rescuing from the 80s. We bead boarded the entry way and then because of that, a designer told me I should leave all the other walls ‘plain’ as well as the same color. I haven’t been at ease with this advice, but was thinking I should follow it as “What do I know?” I love your home and the different walls? It’s beautiful. Thank you for the inspiration. I’m going to plank my living room 🙂

I just came on your site when I googled batten board and shiplap in the same room! We have a large basement family room from the 80’s with tongue and groove walls…one of the room has verticle tongue and groove on the lower portion and dry wall on top. On the other side the tongue and groove are on a diagonal. We love both shiplap and batten board. Will it be bad to have batten board on one side and ship lap on the other? We are probably going right over top of the tongue and groove instead of tearing them all down. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around this!!! Thanks!

Thank you for this post. I have been struggling with the desire to add shiplap planking to my foyer area and fireplace but already have beautiful board and batten in other areas of my home. Seeing your pictures confirms for me that it will look great! Thank you!

I have bead board underneath the chair rail in my den. I want to put shiplap on just one wall. It would be above the headboard. Would that look stupid? I’m not sure. Also I want to use the color agreeable gray by SW. would you paint the whole wall top and bottom the same color or 2 different colors? Help! Thanks, Vickie
