How To Paint Garage Doors: Project Curb Appeal

This post is in collaboration with ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape. All thoughts, opinions and projects ideas are my own.

As promised, I’m back to share how I painted those garage doors for our garage makeover. 😀

The garage doors are the first thing you see once you turn the corner from our long driveway, so I really wanted to make them stand out against the building…

Here’s what we started with… a very similiar color door to the new paint we added to the siding…

So, first I grabbed my Super White paint (a Benjamin Moore® paint color) in semi-gloss exterior and started rolling it on the door…

Once the door panels were coated, I used my brush to go around each raised panel and to cover the seams where the doors open…

They took a total of three coats, but they covered beautifully!…

And since I knew I was going to paint the trim around the doors white to match the rest of the garage, I decided to paint the rubber seal around the door black to add a bit of interest and depth to the doors. Most of the time these match the garage door in color, but I’m a rebel and decided to give them a bit different look. It was such a great decision! 😀

I started by taping off the actual garage door with the ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape Exterior Surfaces 2097. (Although I received great results taping directly on top of my freshly painted garage doors, it’s recommended to wait at least 30 days before applying ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape for Exterior Surfaces on top of a freshly painted surface.)

I was able to actually lift the rubber seal up and press the tape underneath…

And then I taped off the trim around the door…

Once I had the entire door and trim taped off…

I used my brush to paint the rubber seals black…

As soon as I had my last coat on the seal, I started pulling off the tape…

And it was seriously that easy!

And then I started on the other door…

Once both of them were finished (and dried), Anthony and I started installing the new door hardware kits I picked up at Home Depot…

They were really easy to install. We just decided where we wanted each piece to go…

Then, Anthony used a level and pen to mark where the decorative hardware needed to go…

He used our drill to drill the holes first, being careful not go through the insulation on the back side…

Then he screwed them in place with the screws from the kit…

I had him attach them right next to the black seal, that way it all looked connected…

Then, he just did the same thing to the other side, and the other door…

And once we attached the handles, well things got even better!

This transformation is a stunner!

The paint and hardware completely changed the way the doors look… I was blown away!

They look brand new, no joke…

And that hardware? Well, it was the icing on the cake!

Our garage has come such a long way, but painting the actual garage doors and adding the hardware sure made the building go from drab to fab!

And now when we drive in, we have a nice place to look at… a place with curb appeal, even at the end of a long dirt road! 😀

  1. Pretty doors. I have been considering painting my garage doors and wonder what type paint you used. Is there a special paint for use on metal garage doors so that is does not peel? Just don’t want to make more work if I use the wrong paint on metal.

  2. Thank you for reposting because this gives me an idea about the garage door–why do we ones the age of your parents not learn of this trick to paint the rubber seal?!!! Or whatever it is!! And yet how striking that simple yet yes time consuming detail made in the look of your GORGEOUS garage!!! Once again I love the corn in the background!!!

  3. I am going to Home Depot TOMORROW to get this hardware! After seeing it on yours, I just have to do this to my garage doors! Thanks for the beautiful inspiration, as always. : )

  4. Did the paint on the seals last? I’ve read that the paint can actually attach to the door and cause the door to stick!

    1. We’ve sold this home, but up until we moved, we didn’t have any issues with the paint on the seals! I would do it all over again.
