The Hall Bathroom Design Plan

I’m sharing the hall bathroom design plan! See our plan to give this bathroom a big makeover on a budget!

There are several rooms in the Willow House that are getting completely gutted down to the studs, with walls moved and rearranged for better functionality. The hall bathroom is one of them, so today I’m sharing our design plan. Since we’re planning on finishing this bathroom first, and will be using that primarily until we get around to the master bathroom, we’re going full steam ahead on getting it put back together in time to move-in.

First, let me refresh your memory on what this bathroom originally looked like…

Not only was this bathroom disgusting, but incredibly outdated with the most awkward layout. We couldn’t wait to start demolishing everything in the room and starting over.

If you’ve been following my stories on Instagram, you’ve seen quite a bit of behind the scenes action. We’ve been documenting all the details, and as soon as we started breaking things apart, we found so many more issues… which can be said for the whole house. The original plumbing in this house has been leaking in practically every room there’s a faucet, so we quickly discovered mold in a few of the walls and rotted sub flooring. There was no way we were going to go through all the work we’ve done, just to put this bathroom back to it’s original odd floor plan. With that, a new plan for the bathroom was born and we’re so excited to see it come together we can hardly stand it!

Here’s what the floor plan started out as….

And here’s what we’re changing it to…

(Please note, those aren’t to scale, just a rough drawing to show the layout change.)

Removing the closet, and moving the shower/ tub was key to making this bathroom function so much better. Instead of immediately walking into the shower wall, and having a tiny vanity, the room is so much more open, with a large walking path. By moving everything around, we had room to bring in a larger vanity, and install a linen cabinet. Overall, the new floor plan should make this bathroom feel twice as big as when we started.

The exciting part is definitely picking out new design pieces, and figuring out how we want to put it all back together. For this bathroom (and the entire house really), we’re going with a traditional modern design. When I was thinking about the hall bathroom, I knew I wanted to keep it bright and airy, but still have black cabinetry that would ground the space. Here’s the plan, which we’re so excited about:

  1. I love these glass sconce lights for either side of the mirror above the vanity. Great price too!
  2. This round mirror has such a warm brass frame, I can’t wait to get it hung up!
  3. I’ve always loved these types of hooks, so I’m splurging to include this lovely one in the bathroom. It will be perfect for everything from towels, to robes!
  4. I’m mixing metals in the bathroom, and I love the chrome color of this shower head and the way it will look with crisp white tile in the shower.
  5. Totally obsessed with this faucet for the vanity. The lines are sleek and the chrome color ties in with the shower head.
  6. This vanity started it all, and was really my jumping off point for the whole bathroom. There’s so much I love about it from the clean lines, the thick white countertop, and the storage! It comes with legs, but I’ve always pictured it floating on the wall, so that’s what we’re doing with it.
  7. I plan on replacing the standard pulls that come on the cabinet with these brass cup pulls
  8. A classic pattern on this towel, with a hint of cozy! Plus, it ties in perfectly with the shower curtain we bought!
  9. On the back side of the shower, we’ll have just enough space for a linen cabinet. We’re planning on using cabinets from Ikea, with this door! (Ties in perfectly with the vanity too!)
  10. I couldn’t stop thinking about this tile for the shower. It’s larger than it looks at 6″ x 18″, and I can’t wait to see it installed! Plus, I searched everywhere to find a true, bright white tile. (It’s harder than you’d think.)
  11. The perfect knob for the linen cabinet.
  12. I’m tossing out the cheap, plastic shower curtain rings and using these instead! They look amazing, and are very reasonably priced!
  13. Bright white penny tile feels classic to me, so we’ll be installing it behind the vanity as our backsplash, and possibly in the shower as a border.
  14. This floor tile. It’s stunning, with the perfect grey veining going through it. Again, very reasonably priced!
  15. Every bathroom needs artwork, and this forest print just feels right. Plus, I’ll be doing the same thing as the tree print from my last dining room, and that makes it soo affordable!

I can’t wait to see this bathroom come to life. We’ve basically ordered everything, and packages have been arriving the past couple of days, making everything feel like Christmas! And the good news is, that we’re so close to putting this bathroom back together, that it won’t be too long before I share another update with progress!

  1. Love your new layout, it opens up the
room so much. The mixing of the medals
will be a really fresh take on this traditional
bathroom. I can’t wait to see the finished
    product.

  2. Love the layout change and all the finishings you picked out. Looking forward to seeing the bathroom when it’s done.

  3. Love it! Why not put the beautiful vanity on the wall where the shower/bath was so when you open the door you see it? Love all your choices and it will be a stunning bathroom when completed.

  4. I agree that the the new layout is much more functional. Stunning vanity!! Can’t wait to see all this gorgeousness come together!!

  5. I must ask, what program do you use or where did you draw the bathroom design. This would be soooo helpful for me. I’m trying to figure out a design to make our bathroom wheelchair accessible for our daughters.
Can’t wait to see the completed project!!! 🙂

  6. Hey Shayna, Thanks for sharing the detailed process! I like the minimalist approach and you’ve done it really well! Just wondering what the estimated cost of such a renovation project would be! Happy Holidays!
