Drywall In The Loft

It’s been such an exciting few days around here. Amongst several other things that are going on right now, we have drywall in the loft!! Eeek!

While the pictures are nothing super pretty to look at, they are certainly exciting! The drywall has completely changed the entire loft, and it feels like the perfect place for this online business. It’s almost like it’s just been sitting there waiting for this to happen. And happening it is…

The guys came last week and had the all the drywall hung in a day…

Such a huge difference. It’s as dramatic as paint… From drab to fab in no time!

Then, they came back and started adding mud to the seams.

Now, we’re waiting on the last coat for the seams, then they’re going to be adding the texture! I chose a light skip trowel, which is the same texture that we have in the house. The walls will almost look completely smooth, but there will be just a hint of something there.

This past weekend, I decided to sand down the existing beam. It was covered with Orange Shellac, which I just don’t do. At all.

So, I sanded it down to the bare wood and roughed it up for a bit of character. I’ll share more with a specific tutorial, but it made all the difference…

Here’s a good side by side comparison of the difference…

So much better! Anthony and I have also been discussing what we’re going to do as a cover for the top portion of the loft. At first I was thinking doors, but obviously they wouldn’t open with the pitch of the ceiling, so we’re going to build a cover for it instead. I’ll be sharing that tutorial soon as well. 😀

I’m also getting ready to buy all the light fixtures! I have big plans for that back wall..

And, we still have a railing to build around the stairway…

We’ve made so much progress already, but I can’t help but get excited about adding in all the details! They’re my favorite!

All roads lead to painting this weekend! 😀

  1. oh Shayna… just caught up on your last three posts… the drywall is incredible looking and I cannot WAIT to see how you progress with your vision up there. I’m so excited to see it all! And don’t you love moms that will let you vent and cry and then suddenly everything feels better after talking with them?

  2. It looks perfect, just like I knew it would!
And yes, that open stairway makes my hands sweat, so I will feel much better when that railing is up and I do not have to worry about you any more!

  3. How great – isnt it just so much fun to have one more gorgeous room in your home -and you get to decorate it too! (be sure you take out all the magnets that attract clutter before you paint first tho 🙂 ) Congratulations!

  4. Looks amazing!! After just going through a master bath addition, I can relate to the excitement of bare drywall!

  5. Enjoying all the sneak peaks as you progress with you fun space, for your new business. Can’t wait to see how it comes together…. Shayna Style! So, enjoying your blog and maybe soon a couple of Shayna treasures?

  6. I think you could still put a door over the storage area overhead. It would just have to be a double door with hinges running down the middle so as to clear the slope of the ceiling when the doors are open. Anyway…the loft looks fabulous! Keep on keepin on.

  7. It’s looking fab Shayna, and I love the post !! ( : Good choice 😀 I think I am as excited as you are ,lol. Can’t wait for the next step. Have a fun weekend, wish I was there helping 😀 Sincerely, Diena <3

  8. I’ve seen a loft opening similar to that in a friend’s house and they put the hinges in the middle so the doors opened toward the middle. They were angled doors and they didn’t hit the wall when they opened. Not sure if that would work for you, but just an idea.

  9. This will be a great space!, and yes , the details are always the part for sure . The post looks way better sanded and redone … Good call!
