The Night Fall Home Tour

September 30, 2015

If you’ve ever wondered what our home looked like at night, with all the lights on, today I’m sharing the night fall home tour. It’s a different angle of our house, and the lights may cast some funny colors, but here it is!

The Night Fall Home Tour by The Wood Grain Cottage

Taking home interior pictures at night with the lights on is the biggest no-no you can do with blogging. We all know it, and it’s like this unspoken “rule”. We know that it doesn’t supply the best light, it casts weird shadows, and the way the light comes off, what you’re trying to show can be… unsightly. And while I certainly do agree, to a degree, I thought it would be fun to show you all the night tour of our home.

Last week after I took the photos for both part one and part two of our home tour, I had to run a few errands. When I came home, the sun was setting and I was greeted with a clean, pretty home. I began turning on all of our “normal” lights, (you know, the ones you use every night) and I was instantly inspired to share that side of our home with you. I’ve really been feeling compelled to share more of who we are, and in that moment, with our pinto beans just being combined, and the corn drying, the neighbors harvesting their pinto beans, all was right in the world. Dinner was getting ready to be made, and that moment was beautiful. I was so very grateful. So, I picked up my camera and snapped pictures of our home right as the sun was setting.

With all the lights on, there are a few random streaks of light, the colors aren’t exactly right, and they aren’t the best pictures I’ve ever taken. But, looking through them I was reminded of what home really is. It’s the house being warm and welcoming. It’s the familiar scents of food cooking, and knowing that Anthony will be coming home from working on the farm. It’s wanting to curl up on the couch and relax after a busy day. That is what I want to share with you. And the windows that you always see, actually have something beyond them… our views!

Enjoy, sweet friends!

I’ve had so many e-mails and comments regarding the “How Great Thou Art” pillow in the picture below. I am so proud to say we make that, and that it will be available in our online shop coming very, very soon!

I hope you enjoyed the tour. It’s such a different perspective when the lights are on. It feels welcoming, warm and happy. But mostly, it feels like home.

Your home is lovely and as a regular reader I don’t recall ever seeing the photo of your kitchen with fridge, double ovens and mircowave full on like that (I may just have forgotten.) I really like that photo angle. This is a great night tour and gives a different but very pretty look to your home. I actually like the play of shadows and warmth. You are right that it adds a hominess and better sense of what you, as homeowners, would view living there throughout the day. The photos you shared today help to give me a better understaning of the layout of your home. And the views from the french doors and breakfast area -just lovely! Thanks for sharing it today.

I love these pictures! They make your house look so warm and cozy, like people actually live there instead of a model home. So beautiful. Have we seen pictures of the side of the house beyond the kitchen?

I think these pictures are great! To heck with what’s appropriate. The light gives that warm glow that makes you want to make a cup of tea, grab that cute throw and cuddle up on your couch!

    Thanks for sharing!

Looks cozy! Love the last pictures of the sunset. Will search your site, but if you haven’t already talked about them I would be interested in your bamboo shades. Are they clipped up to the wall and are they really shades or something you made to look like shades? TIA

Thank you so much, April! 🙂 Our bamboo blinds are from Wayfair. They don’t provide a ton of privacy, but we don’t really need it because of where we live, plus we have curtains. They are mounted to the wall with a hook. Here’s the (affiliate) link to them: http://bit.ly/1KP5xk5

Love the tour with night coming to your corner of the world….you have such an inviting home. I would be very interested in one of the “How great thou art” pillows…how much will they be and what would shipping cost to Alberta? I also liked the photo of the other side of your kitchen that shows the fridge and coffee station. Our coffee station is one of my favorite corners in our house too. Take care!

Love your home, especially your kitchen. Love those dark cabinets and the wall with the double ovens. Did you design your home? Also, could you please tell me what you use to clean your stainless steel appliances, they look stunning!

Thank you so very much, Jeri! We did kind of design our home… we picked a floor plan we liked and made a bunch of alterations to fit our budget. And those stainless steel appliances are a little tricky to clean. I’ve found the 3M stainless steel cleaning kit/ wipes to be the most effective. It’s also very easy! http://www.ebay.com/itm/3M-960SS-Stainless-Steel-Cleaner-Starter-Kit-960-SS-3M-Flexible-Handle-Six-Pads-/181757347674
      I hope that helps! 🙂

Shayna your home is just beautiful!!! You have very good taste and are a great decorator! Where exactly do you live? Do you live very far from the city where you shop? Your home looks very isolated; do you have neighbors? I haven”t read your blog for long but I sure am going to start following you! I just loved your tour of yoursat “dusk”! I love that time of day!! Take care and I”m anxious to shop your upcoming “store”! Take care. Sandee from Fairfax Va.
