The small town Colorado girl who’s obsessed with home and everything that entails! I’m a creative, a decorator, a day dreamer, a huge fan of scones, and I’m passionate about loving where I live and making a home.
A while back I was thrift shopping with my very good friend when I ran into an awesome spinning stool. Interestingly enough, I almost walked right by it because it had a huge 8 inch thick foam seat covered in some very stained denim. It also had wire wrapped all around the base of the legs. It was one of those moments where I was in utter shock. Shocked that someone would ever put an 8 inch piece of foam on top of a little stool. Shocked that they would then proceed to wrap tons of wire around the bottom. And completely shocked that this little stool could spin.
That was all I needed to know. We marched up to the cash register, I paid the $10 and proudly went on my way hoping that whatever was beneath that massive amount of foam would be in good condition… Luckily it all was.
So today, I’m sharing this lovely spinning stool and its makeover story, because believe me, it wanted a makeover.
Call me a bad blogger or whatever, but I couldn’t even put the stain covered denim and foam in my truck… I ripped it off and never looked back… this is where things starting getting a whole lot better….
After letting this guy sit in our garage for a while, I decided to paint him with Carbon from DecoArt’s new Chalky Finish paint line…
I only applied one coat…
Then I let it dry and gave it a heavy sanding with medium grit sand paper…
After I cleaned it off, I applied two coats of the clear creme wax to bring out the darkness in the black and the brown wood tones…
I’ve always loved furniture where the dark stained wood was peeking out from beneath the black paint, and this guy shows it off perfectly!
And you’d better believe that I sat on this baby and gave it good spin…
Anthony may have walked in at that moment and thought I’d entirely lost it…
I’m not sure what gave me away…
It could have been my squealing… or the huge smile on face… or the wind blowing in my hair…
But I think he knew this spinning stool wasn’t going anywhere… And he’d be right!
You can find the new Chalky Finish paint at Home Depot and Michaels! They have so many fun colors to choose from too! Happy Painting!

I love it… and thanks so much for the lead on that paint, can’t wait to try some of it! 🙂
Shayna, I love this stool! Would this be a good paint for a child’s chair? I was going to spray paint them black. They get a lot of use and are wiped down many times during the week. What are your thoughts? Will the paint hold up?
It turned out so great!
What a find!! I have a similar bench like that, and it also spins, the seat is made to be highered or lowered. It was my Mom’s piano stool and now I know exactly what i’m going to do with it!! I love the way yours came out, and I’m also a fan of the Deco Art Chalky paint from Home Depot! Thanks so much for sharing this post and have tons of fun spinning!! One can never be to old to spin!!
OMGosh you are so cute – I can just picture you spinning around and around saying wheeee
But really – what a great buy.
My husband and I went to an estate sale on Sunday and found this beautiful drop leaf table and there is not one nail in the entire table – its put together by using dove tales.
It only cost $60 –
It look perfect in my husbands office…
Have a wonderful day.
it looks like it has always been that way, sophisticated and erudite….lovely – but I’d love to have seen the BEFORE pic too! Sounded like a nightmare.
I saw that paint at home depot. I want to try it. How did you apply the wax? I’m never sure how to do that
Oh I love painting furniture with that spindly shape…actually painting it is annoying but the results are so great! The perfect shape for a chalky distressed finish. Beautiful job Shayna!
This turned out so great…love the new look! I am a big fan of this paint, too. Hopped over from the wonderful feature at Eclectically Vintage…I am a new follower by email!
[…] stool. Big or small, tall or short, I just really love them. (Here’s some proof: Stool 1, Stool 2, Stool 3!) So much in fact, that I currently have four sitting in our garage. I can’t help […]
