Side Chair Makeover- Take 2

October 23, 2013

A while back I gave a thrift store chair a makeover. It was one of my very first projects. At first I really liked it. I mean, it was so much better than how it originally looked, but over time I grew tired of it. I was ready to give it another makeover.

Originally, I used spray paint to cover up the previously painted finish. I’ve found though, that spray paint isn’t my choice to refinish furniture. Almost every piece that I’ve spray painted, I have re-painted or have plans to repaint. I’d much rather hand paint the item.

That was one of the reasons that I really wanted to give this chair a makeover. I felt like it could be so much more.

I was right.

For the paint, I used the new Chalky Finish from DecoArt. It’s fabulous! The coverage is great and it shows little to no brush strokes! Prep work is also unnecessary!

I painted it with Primitive. It’s a little bit gray and a little bit taupe. It’s a lovely color.

This is what it looked like after the first coat…

It only took 2 coats to get complete coverage.

Once the paint was fully dry, I went back over the entire chair with the clear creme wax. It does darken the paint slightly, but the color doesn’t really change. Wax makes all the difference!

Then I used the deep brown creme wax and went over just the chair legs. A little bit goes a looong way!

I wiped it into the chair leg grooves… And kept at it until I was happy.

Then, I re-waxed the legs with the clear creme wax. It lightens the dark wax, which is what I wanted since I didn’t want to wax the entire chair with the dark wax.

Once the chair was finished, I started reupholstering the cushion…

I love to reupholster with denim, especially the back side. It’s got such a great texture and light pattern! This piece of denim even looks like linen!

With the cushion recovered, I reattached it to the chair.

I love this makeover!

And I love how the denim looks with the paint color.

I’m so happy I decided to give this chair another makeover. The first one just wasn’t cutting it anymore.

You can find the new Chalky Finish paint online at Home Depot! They have so many fun colors to choose from too! Happy Painting!

I have been looking for an alternative to the pricey chalk paints I keep seeing. Had no idea Home Depot carried this line. Is it only available online? How does price compare with ASCP? Really want to try this – your chair, and the powder room vanity, look awesome!!!

THANK YOU so much, Jane! I really love the paint! I’ve never worked with the ASCP… the price has always stopped me from buying it. DecoArt just came out with their new chalky finish paint It’s available through Home Depot’s website. I haven’t been notified that it’s for sale in stores… Truly love this paint and wax!
      Hope that helps! 😀

I’m so with you on the no spray painting furniture!! When I do, it comes out wrong, so I hand paint everything! The chair was nice to begin with, but I love the New make over! 😀

Hi Shayna, I am visiting from Diane’s blog where she gave a little tour of your beautiful home. I had to come over and see it all for myself. You have done an amazing job with your decorating! It looks like a magazine spread. I like your style and ideas for making things like the big welcome sign. Have a great day!
