Decorating Shelves Above The Toilet

April 10, 2017

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you may remember last year when we installed shelves above our toilet in the master bathroom. Since installing them, I’ve never really “decorated” them. Sure, I added a basket or two, but that was about it. But even with the shelves not decorated, this little area in our bathroom is one of my favorite views. The dark wall behind the shelves, the crisp white planking and the rough texture of the wood all combines to create the perfect backdrop for accessories.

I know decorating shelves above the toilet can be a little bit tricky, but I’m absolutely loving how our little area came together. I shopped the house and was able to use things we already had. Here’s how it came together…

I started the shelves with the metal basket filled with toilet paper. From there I added the rolled towels, and the pop of white from the towels and toilet paper bring in a lovely crisp contrast against the dark black wall…

On the top shelf, I added antlers, and I love the shape and texture that they add to the shelves, plus some metal candle holders…

I loved their simplicity (don’t I always?), but something was missing…

The gap between the shelf and toilet felt really large, so I opted to hang some framed art in order to connect the shelves and the top of the toilet…

It instantly changed the whole display, and I loved how the simple frame and matting tied in the plank wall…

As soon as the frame was in place, the whole area came together…

One of the big reasons I love this little display, is because of all the texture… and how bright this space is. You wouldn’t think it’d be so bright with the black wall, but surprisingly, it’s very fresh and bright.

So there you have it… a year later and I’ve finally decorated those lovely shelves. And it’s all staying right there because I love it. 😉

Just painted my powder room similar colors. Charcoal gray wall with what I thought was a nice off-white for shiplap. However, shiplap is UGLY and yellow-ish. Can you tell me what color paint you used in your bathroom?
    Thanks!

    Hi,

Lovely bathroom! How did you do the rough effect on the black part of the wall? It looks really amazing…

Love the decor and shiplap wall! What size is this space? I am currently remodeling a bathroom and wondering if this size would work for us. Thanks!

Thank you! Unfortunately, we sold this home and I’m not entirely sure what the dimensions are. Sorry that’s not more helpful.
