Chalkboard Pantry Door

March 13, 2013

We have this pantry door. Before we moved in I decided to paint it Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore. It gave the mudroom a perfect punch of color, but also distinguished which door was the pantry.

Several months later, I still love that blue door but wanted to spice it up even more.

Fore a while now, I’ve been itching to paint something with chalkboard paint. I’ve used the chalkboard spray paint, which is awesome, but I wanted to use the canned version. This was the perfect first project. 🙂

To start, I quickly taped the edges of the door panel with my scotch blue edge lock tape. I rubbed the edge making sure it had a really good grip.

Then I grabbed the chalkboard paint, stirred it really well and used a smooth foam roller to paint the door. I gave it a couple of even coats, then removed the tape leaving crisp lines!

The next day I gave the door a second coat, being careful not to paint over my line, and let it cure for the directed three days.

Three days later, I seasoned the chalkboard by rubbing the entire door with a solid coat of chalk.

It was a messy job!

Once it was clean, I had to start doodling. Which meant writing my name… and a partial grocery list.

As a side note, I love the chalk markers. So. much. better. than regular chalk. My writing actually looks like my writing… amazing!

When I was done writing my name repeatedly, I decided to use the door as our menu board.

I absolutely love the functionality of it and can see that I’ll be changing it up regularly.

Need to leave a quick note? Check!

Want to write down the grocery list? Double Check!

Fun saying? Triple Check!

And I’m totally digging the way the door molding makes the chalkboard look framed. Fantastic.

Plus, there’s no questioning what’s for dinner. Anthony likes that too… especially when he has a recipe named after him!

In a hallway with 3 doors, this one pleasantly stands out…

Who knew such a simple, easy peasy project could be so much fun?! Now I’m wondering what else I can spice up…
