DIY Scrap Wood Letter

Our scrap wood pile has been growing with all the DIY projects we’ve been making. Luckily, I really like to dig through it to see what my options are. It’s one of my favorite past times, and a challenge I look forward to. Creating something amazing out of scraps= a bunch of fun!

And since we love to share projects for $30 or less on $30 Thursday (the first Thursday of each month), this DIY scrap wood letter fits right in!

This scrap wood letter was so easy to make— promise! Plus, you can customize it to your initial! And even if you don’t have the scrap wood laying around, you can easily buy one fence picket for less than $30. Woot!

It’s so easy to make! Here’s how!

First, start with your scrap wood fence pickets. I didn’t even have a specific measurement in mind, but knew I could make these work.

To use as much of the scrap as I could, I trimmed off as little as possible, leaving me with two sets of the same size board. Then, I laid them out on a table with the longest of the boards on the sides, the shortest on the top and bottom…

Then, I added a bit of wood glue to the shorter piece…

I placed them evenly on each corner, making sure two screws would attach to each board…

I followed the same steps on each side, starting with the wood glue on each board. Once all the brackets were in place, it looked like this:

Then I stained the boards with Early American by Minwax…

Please note: I forgot to buy screws that were short enough for the fence pickets. Because I forgot, and I couldn’t find any other screws in our stash, and I didn’t want to run back to town, I went ahead and used the screws that came with the brackets. I used our grinder and grinded them off. Problem solved.
