Updating Our Hallway Lighting

A few weeks ago, I shared how we updated our hallway with board and batten… talk about a transformation to the space. One day it was a plain and basic hallway, the next it was bright and full of character. But shortly before we added the board and batten, we decided it was time to update our hallway lighting too. When we built the house, we installed two basic can lights in the hallway, and while there wasn’t anything wrong with the lighting, I felt the hallway would benefit from two pendant type lights to add extra character.

We also happened to have two pendant lights sitting in our garage. A few years ago, when we gave our fixer upper a makeover, I had bought these two lights at Ikea thinking I’d use them in the laundry room. Well, they ended up not working, so I brought them home hoping we’d eventually find a place for them. The hallway seemed to be the perfect place. Because we had can lighting installed, we needed to install a conversion kit so that the pendant light could be installed where the can lights were. We’ve used these kits several times and they work like a charm!

Here’s what we used to complete this little project:

First, let’s take a peek at what we started with, just a basic can light…

We removed the bulb and the trim kit of the can light…

And then installed the conversion kit…

Anthony did all the electrical, and then we started mounting the new light to the ceiling…

The conversion kits also include a molding piece that covers the metal trim you can see in the above picture…

And just like that, we had new lights for the hallway!

They make such a huge difference…

I love their fun shape too. They add a nice vibe to the hallway.

Lighting always makes such a huge difference to any space. The can lights were basically invisible in this hallway, and now that we have these pendant lights installed, the lights are one of the first things you notice in person.

I’m so glad we made the swap! These smaller projects really do make the difference!

And just in case you’re curious, you can buy the wreath here, and the rug here.

  1. Oh my gosh!! Thank you for posting this. I thought I was stuck with those recessed lights in my kitchen. I have one above my kitchen sink and so badly wanted a pretty chandelier….but never thought I could have one. You are a total lifesaver!! And those lights are awesome BTW 🙂

  2. I think those look great! Do you find that they are high enough and don’t feel like they’re in the way?
