Guest Room Plan

With the office almost done (we only have a few things left to do!), I’m starting to turn my attention to our guest room. And I have to say, I am pretty excited about this room… I think it has something to do with the fact that our last guest room pretty much just stored overflow items. Sure, it had a bed and a dresser and the such, but stacked on the bed and on the dresser was “stuff” I didn’t know what to do with. If guest were coming over, I’d spend a few good hours in there managing the “stuff”. The closet was beyond hope, so I prayed our guests wouldn’t open the doors. It’s purely comical for me at this point, because it was a total wreck. But, not anymore! Here’s the guest room plan!

If you’ve been following along with the blog, you know that we recently swapped the guest room and the office. The office moved into the old guest room, and the guest room moved into the old office. It just made more sense, especially for the office side of things. And now that I’m working in the new office (woohoo!), the new guest room is at a pretty blank slate, except for a few furniture pieces, the yard sale pile I’ve created, and my old office furniture that my aunt bought and will be moving next week! Here’s what it looks like right now…

Next week the room will basically be ready to go, which leads me to my design plan for the room…

1. Ikea Frames: For artwork above the bed.
2. Charcoal Gray Headboard: I’ll be reupholstering the one we already have.
3. Oversized Sweater Pillow: Love the texture they’ll add to the bed.
4. Blue Tartan Pillows: I scored mine at Pier 1 Imports on mega clearance!
5. Metal Basket: They’ll go under our floating night stands.
6. Ikea Curtains: They’ll add softness to the room.
7. Concrete Lamp: I’ll be using our DIY Lamps instead, but this picture gives a good example of how they’ll tie in with everything.
8. Round Brass Mirror: A guest room always needs a mirror!
9. Faux Plant: For a nice pop of color and freshness.
10. Black Dresser: I’ll be giving our dresser a makeover.
11. Artwork: The inspiration for the room, and the perfect large scale art piece for one of the walls.
12. Halo by Benjamin Moore: The current creamy color on the walls. I just need to touch up the walls, and it will look perfect with the plank wall color, Vintage Frame by Valspar.
13. Floating Nightstands: We’ll be DIY’ing our own version, but these give me major inspiration!

Whenever I think of this room, and how I want it to feel, I always go back to the feeling of warmth and coziness. Always. I’ve envisioned the room with darker, but warm colors, cozy bedding, neutral accessories and a lounge like feel to it. But… I really didn’t want to spend a ton on it either since it’s one of the least used rooms in the house. Don’t get me wrong, I want this room to be lovely, and I want our guests to feel welcomed, but I don’t want to spend a ton on it. So, to keep costs down, I’ll be using a lot of the items we already own, and only adding in a few new things to finish the space. 

My biggest source of inspiration for the room, other than how I wanted it to feel (which is always the best starting place for designing a new room!), was this print I had made for our original office…

You can read more about it, and the meaning behind the picture here, but that picture holds a special meaning to me. The picture is of my parents’ property. I grew up running around that tree, and it’s also been a major branding element for this blog and everything I represent. There was no way I wasn’t keeping it, and it just happened to be the perfect piece of artwork for the new guest room. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but the colors throughout the mountains in the picture have the perfect warmth I was wanting, and I’ll be using those colors to pull from for the rest of the room… 

We already have the bed and headboard for the room, but I’ll be using that lovely gray fabric pictured above to reupholster the headboard. We also have this dresser…

I’m planning on painting it black, updating the hardware and bringing it back to life, so to say. 

And as for the rest of the furniture in the room, Anthony and I will be DIY’ing our own version of the floating night stand. Of course I’ll be sharing all the tutorials for what we do and change, but I can’t wait to get started! Because we aren’t majorly changing or creating anything for the room (as much as I’d love to trim out the window and build new closet doors!), this room makeover should come together pretty quick!

The other big element that I’ll be adding to the room, is painting the plank wall we installed a few years ago. I’m going with Vintage Frame by Valspar. It’s the same color I just used in the dining room, and I think it’s going to be perfect for the space!

So… that’s the plan, and I honestly couldn’t be more excited! As soon as my aunt comes and gets the office furniture, I’ll be painting that plank wall! More to come soon! 🙂
