Well, we added another plank wall in the breakfast nook. It’s just about the perfect way to add character, texture and a custom touch without breaking the bank. I’m a big lover of the plank wall, and I’m so happy to have this project finished!

A while ago, I had a vision for our breakfast nook. Like it normally happens, out of the blue, I walked by the breakfast nook and was captivated with a vision. Amongst other things, we needed to add another plank wall to finish out the breakfast nook. When we originally did the first one on the window wall, I wasn’t certain what I would think of the plank wall. That was our very first one, and as soon as it was painted, I knew I could never look at a regular wall the same way. The plank wall completely changed me, and it wasn’t long after that we added several more throughout the house. And I’ll be honest, I plan on adding a few more in the future. 🙂

I’ve already shared the tutorial before, but here’s a little breakdown of how we did it…

We used the same material as always, 1/4″ underlayment from Home Depot. It comes in a 4’x8′ sheet and we ripped it down to 6″ strips on our table saw, long ways. 

We started at the top, making sure the planks lined up with our existing plank wall…

We used a few nickels to achieve the “gaps” between each plank, and keep working our way down the wall, always making sure the planks lined up with the other wall…

This was actually one of the easiest walls we’ve done in the house. There were minimal cuts, which made it go by fast…

Once we got to the bench, we had to notch the planks to fit around it, and the outlet…

I filled the holes, which always takes a bit of time, but it’s way worth it. I painted the wall White Dove by Benjamin Moore mixed in Ace Royal eggshell, which is what the other wall is painted. I was a tiny bit hesitant to paint it a different color than our living room board and batten, because they do connect, but I didn’t want to repaint the other wall, so I went with my gut and painted it White Dove rather than Super White. I’m so happy I did. The White Dove color isn’t as bright white, more of a creamy white, while the super white is a bright white. The two look wonderful together!

The only thing left to do, is to add quarter round to the corner where the two plank walls meet. I haven’t made a trip to Home Depot lately, which is totally shocking since it’s basically my second home. It’s on the list for my next trip. 🙂 

Truly, it doesn’t look bad as is, but the quarter round does give it a cleaner, more finished look. But, considering how great the plank wall is, I don’t really notice the missing quarter round.

And one of the main reasons I wanted to plank this wall, other than it really needed it, was because of the entry way. Since we also planked those walls, I wanted the living room to feel “framed” by the plank walls. Since we do have a different wall treatment on those walls (board & batten), I wanted the three rooms to feel connected to one another. Adding this plank wall completed that…

Now, the board and batten in the living room touches a plank wall on either side of the room…

I’ll touch a little bit later on my decision to mix the two wall treatments, because I really did think hard on it before we planked the entry, and I know a few of you may be struggling with mixing the two together.

It feels so much more lighter and brighter! I have some more things to tweak, but this room is coming together!
