DIY Tea Towel Pillows
Ready to make your own pillows? These DIY Tea Towel Pillows are an easy sewing project, perfect for beginners!
I’m in the middle of a bunch of projects. I’m here, I’m there… I’m everywhere! But in the mean time, I decided I needed to sew a few easy pillows. Pillows make everything else in the day so much better. I mean, there almost isn’t anything better than having a bunch of pillows to brighten your day. Almost.
And as much as I love pillows, I love the easy to make pillows even more. That’s where these DIY tea towel pillows were born. Yes, right from the tea towel itself.
No need to worry about cutting, having enough fabric, or even sewing a seam. Even though I used my sewing machine, this could easily be done with some sewing tape. Worry free. 🙂

Supplies:
- Tea Towels, these are similar to the ones I used
- Iron
- Sewing Machine
- White Thread
- Fabric Scissors, these are similar to mine
- Polyfil
Step One: Wash Tea Towels & Iron Them
First, I started by washing my tea towels, which I bought at IKEA….
Then, I went over them with my iron to smooth them out…
Step Two: Match Up Tea Towels For Each Pillow
Because I had four towels, I decided to match them up to make two pillows. I chose my towel, then matched them up front side in…
Step Three: Start Sewing
Then, I sewed the seam along all of the edges, except the bottom, where I left the middle section untouched for stuffing purposes.
With it sewed, I grabbed each corner and pulled it inside out…
Step Four: Add Pillow Stuffing
Stuff the hole with polyfil. You could easily adapt this to fit a pillow form, but that would require a little extra work. 🙂
Step Five: Sew The Bottom Closed
With it stuffed, I went back to the sewing machine and sewed it closed. I promise, it’s easy!
Step Six: Enjoy
And that’s that…
They’re pretty darn cute…
And, um….. reversible! 🙂
Change of mood strikes (it happens….), flip them over. A stain? No worries. Flip them over.
I’m pretty positive they’re going out on the patio, but since the rain won’t. ever. stop., they’re hanging out inside…
And truth be told, I’m totally fine with it. Especially since I love the double sided loveliness! 🙂
So, if you’re looking for an easy project, or just a little switcheroo, this one is for you! 🙂

Great minds think alike, I made the same pillows even mixing the stripes and the checks last year. They are so cute.
They look great. I’ve done similar ones with placemats, napkins and vintage linens for just a few dollars each. Not a big investment and easy to make another set when you want to change the look.
Love the idea of flipping them ! Going shopping for sewing tape( never heard of it) that’s how DIY I am. Pillows are so expensive and these would look great in any room or on my porch swings. You have the greatest ideas!
Lovely bit of summer ! Thanks for the idea! A person can never have too many pillows!
Too cute Shayna, i have made pillows out of placemats before because (truth be told, i can’t get my bobbin into my sewing machine ! ) the placemat is usually made of a much thicker material and a little easier to sew by hand, ( since I’m a novice at sewing machines, lol ) but i haven’t tried to use tea towels “yet”. These are so cute ( Ikea, huh? ), perfect for the home or outdoors ( = Thanks and have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend. Sincerely, Diena
Pretty darn cute… and love the life philosophy- stressed? Sew some pillows, “pillows make everything else in the day so much better.” Words to de-stress by!
LOVE these easy peasy farmhouse pillows! I’ll have to try these!
i love these!
Love these, Shayna! And, I have those same towels from IKEA … hmmmm … you’ve got my wheels spinning and are tempting me to blow the dust off of my super cool Martha Stewart sewing machine and use it for the very first time to attempt to make these! Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂
Hi Shayna,
Your pillows look wonderful and I love the built in bench in your eating area. In fact, I have loved everything I have seen on your blog. You have a nice style and are very talented.
Btw, do those pillows have blue stripes or gray stripes on them? I have seen the tea towels at IKEA and have thought they were blue, in your photos here they look gray. I will definitely go get some if they are gray!!
Cindy
Thank you so much, Cindy! I’m so happy you enjoy the blog! 🙂 The pillows are blue, but not a very vibrant blue. I hope that helps! 🙂
