Mudroom Built- In Shelf

Earlier this week I shared our new mudroom planking. It’s made such a huge impact on this little room, and it’s projected us right into a little mudroom makeover.

Our mudroom isn’t very big, at all, so I really want to maximize the storage and organization that we can fit in this little room. From boots, to hats, scarves, dog treats, etc. this room sees it all, and we really needed some sort of system.

My first mission, after the planking, was to create a built-in shelf for the mudroom.

Here’s where we left off:

The shelf was really easy to attach since we had just installed the 3/4″ mdf finishing board at the top of the v-groove planking…

While Anthony finished up on the planking, I started painted the 10″ wide pine board that I picked up for the shelf…

Once the shelf was dry, Anthony and I started on the bracket. Because the shelf was a bit short of 10″, the bracket was a bit longer than the shelf…

Plus, we had to notch around the mdf board on the back, so Anthony put the bracket in place, then used a pencil to trace the shape…

Then, he used his table saw to trim the back side of the bracket and to notch around the mdf…

He attached it with our nail gun…

And we were left with this…

We used Gorilla Glue on the top of the mdf 3/4″ board and bracket…

Then he placed the shelf on top and used our nail gun to attach the shelf to the bracket and mdf ledge. I filled in all the gaps with caulking…

Here’s what we were left with…

I painted it Super White by Benjamin Moore, which is the same as the planking…

Then I added a few glass jars and filled them with dog treats, because hey, we have to keep our priories straight…

I already feel organized and we’re not even done yet…

This shelf is wonderful! It’s right at 6 ft high, so it’s out of the way if you walk by, but easy enough that I can just reach up and pull down the jars…

Now we have to build our coat rack, add the new bench and add in all the small details, which are my favorite!

I’ll be back soon with another update… but in the mean time, I’m absolutely thrilled with how things are progressing!

Here’s to organizing really soon!

  1. Hi! I love everything about your blog! I was hoping that you could share (and please forgive me if I am missing the info somewhere) what size/name/whatever info you have for the planking? I am looking to do a similar look and like the wider sections than what is offered in traditional beadboard. I’ve spent some time on Lowes.com and can’t seem to figure out what I should get. Thanks is advance! Best of luck with the rest of the room!

    1. THANK YOU so very much, Lisa! We get the wider beadboard or planking at Home Depot. They sell it right next to the traditional beadboard. It’s called v-groove paneling and the “planks” are three inches wide.
      I hope that helps! 😀

  2. You did an outstanding job, I’m thinking of copying it for my son and his wife – can’t think of a bigger compliment than that!

    1. THANK YOU so very much, Heather! I’m so happy you’re going to do the same thing! Such a wonderful compliment! 😀

  3. Looks great! I loved it before, also, but could see how you could pretty it up a bit!
May I just say that I am a glue nerd, and I love Gorilla Glue to pieces! It is an awesomely strong wood glue.
I’ve used it for so very many things, and I just have to remember to dampen one or both surfaces being glued. I should be a spokesperson!

    1. THANK YOU so much, Patty! I’m so happy with the way it’s coming together! And I’m with you, that Gorilla Glue is great stuff! 😀

  4. Y’all ROCK! Come on over… trade services; handy work for pizza! My hubbylicious is a chef, & we own a lil’pizza place… can’t hurt to ask lol;) I love that sweet shelf… good job guys!
    Blessings & <3
