How To Install Window Insulator Kits

When we built our home, we literally built it in a field. I absolutely wouldn’t change that, but in the fall and winter we get massive amounts of cold wind that blow directly on the west side of our home. That also just happens to be the side of our master bedroom. I can’t even tell you how many nights I’ve laid awake listening to the wind pound against the side of the house. At first it was hard to get used to, but it’s getting easier to ignore.

Last year was our first winter in our home, so I was anxious to see how well everything would keep warm. The best thing we ever did when building was install geo-thermal for our heating and cooling. Even though we have new windows, the amount of wind that we get on this side of the house is unbelievable at times. So, when 3M asked me to review their 3Mâ„¢ Window Insulator Kits, I was all about it! I truly wanted to see how much of a difference we would notice this fall and winter.

Because we haven’t had them installed all that long, I haven’t seen any money savings, but I will definitely be watching!

And really, we were so happy with how easy they were to install… And how invisible they are!

We started with my side…

After Anthony measured the window, we then measured and cut the plastic for the window, leaving an extra inch on each side, just like the directions said.

With the plastic cut, Anthony installed the tape around the window…

Then we got out my hair dryer…

I was totally excited to see all those wrinkles disappear, clearly it’s the small things that count in this house!

I was surprised with how close the blow dryer needed to get to the plastic in order for the wrinkles to disappear, but disappear they did!

See how they totally vanish? Neat-o!

Honestly, I would never even know we had plastic on the windows. The directions were great- and so simple!- and best of all, I can tell that there isn’t air sneaking through! I love that!, and I’m so happy to know that the pounding wind won’t cause me anymore nights worrying about heating cost… although I think it’ll still wake me up occasionally… I guess I should have figured that out when we were building! Oh well!

    1. So far we’re loving them! At least I’m not the only one who doesn’t get sleep on stormy nights! 😀
      Happy Halloween to YOU!

  1. 🙂 Now, I have to show your post to hubby, we really need to do this for one of our windows in the living room and the one going up the stairs
I hope it will be easy to install for hubby like it was for you! 🙂 we have the wind coming in from those 2 windows and we can feel it when we walk next to those windows
I will make sure to look for this, this weekend 🙂
hope you are having a great day Shayna 🙂

    1. THANK YOU, Ingrid! So far so good! I was so excited to try them— anything is worth a shot if it means lower heating costs! 😀
They are really simple to install!

  2. Have tried this 3M….was not really impressed….the best thing is to also install a storm type window
on what you have already. Easterners know about this. Also, if you have big winds ripping by a
corner or section of a building my advice……get creative, build and re-direct the wind.

There are other solutions for this type of thing, it does take some work, but well worth it…

    Good luck!

    1. Bummer, Sel! I’m hoping they work— so far so good! 😀
We are definitely going to be getting creative in directing the wind… One project at a time though! 😀

    1. I will let you know, Geri! So far, so good! I can definitely tell that air isn’t seeping in!
Love that they’re practically invisible too! 😀

  3. They work better if you can install them on the outside of the frame. Of course, you can’t open your windows without destroying the plastic. It’s still pretty unnoticeable.
