DIY Burlap Flag

Welcome to the project that almost wasn’t.

I almost gave up on it. Twice.

Generally, I’m a patient person. I can handle situations that prove to be challenging and if anything, I’ll do it just because I didn’t think I could.

Then came this project. It’s been on my “to-do” list for a little while and I was really ready to give the entry way a few different accessories.

This project tried my patience. The only reason I didn’t toss it in the trash, was because I knew it could look amazing…

That, and I couldn’t let freezer paper get the best of me.

But to be completely honest, I could have saved myself a little bit of frustration along the way.

For some reason, I had the bright idea to trace the saying onto the freezer paper and then use a razor knife to cut the words out. I had actually cut all the words out and was getting ready to peel them back. That’s where I started having trouble. And screaming.

Step 1 | The Wood Grain Cottage

So I walked away from it.

And this is where it gets funny.

I kept trying to think of something that would cut the paper for me… Never mind the fact that I have a silhouette sitting in the next room that’s… wait for it… specifically made for cutting things.

And I’d just used it for several other things.

Yep. I’m a thinker. And really bright apparently.

Please tell me I’m not the only one with moments like this!

After the silhouette cut the design, I used a razor blade to peel the words away. So. Much. Better.

Then, I ironed it in place…

And added all the little parts of the letters… If you don’t add them, the letters will look really funny…

Step 4 | The Wood Grain Cottage

After ironing everything in place really well, I grabbed some leftover paint from this project and a foam brush and started dabbing the paint on.

Do NOT brush the paint on… only dab it on.

Step 5 | The Wood Grain Cottage

With the paint still a bit wet, I started pulling the freezer paper off. I used a razor blade to lift off the inside parts of the words.

Step 6 | The Wood Grain Cottage

With that, it’s done! And it couldn’t be prettier.

But really, how true is the saying? The heart of the home IS the heart.

I used jute rope and braided 3 pieces together to give the handle a bit of a chunkier look.

I absolutely love it!

I get excited about textures and this has lots of them! From the burlap and jute to the glass knobs on the rack to the wicker basket and ceramic stand.

This corner makes me happy.

Moral of the story: don’t give up! Just don’t.

The outcome is worth it!
