DIY Garden Plant Stakes

As you might know, I grew up on a very large farm. I guess you could say that farming & gardening is in my blood. My husband and I are even lucky enough to have our very own farm.

As a child & teenager, I can still remember the many summer days I spent with my mom & dad working in the garden and fields. While I didn’t love every second of pulling weeds or hoeing the garden, I’m so happy that they made me stick it out at times.

Today, it’s one of the things that I enjoy the most!

Basically, when I think of summer time, I think of farming and gardening. And today, I’m sharing some really cute and really easy garden plant stakes.

I just love them!

To start, I bought a $3.00 pack of stakes from Home Depot.

Once I got them home, I typed up a list of our vegetables, made sure they would fit on the stakes, and printed them out.

step 2 | The Wood Grain Cottage

I gave each stake a light white wash with equal parts water and white paint.

step 3 | The Wood Grain Cottage

So easy…. I didn’t even sand them smooth. I left them just like they came.

step 4 | The Wood Grain Cottage

I cut around each of my words…

Then flipped them over and covered the entire backside with blue chalk.

step 6 | The Wood Grain Cottage

I made sure to evenly space each of the words onto the stake, then used a pencil to trace around each letter a couple of times…

step 7 | The Wood Grain Cottage

I pulled off the paper and was left with a faint outline of each letter.

step 8 | The Wood Grain Cottage

Then, I traced each letter with my pencil.

step 9 | The Wood Grain Cottage

Once all the words were traced onto the stakes, I was ready to paint!

step 10 | The Wood Grain Cottage

I mixed a few different colors to make a dark blue/ black color. Then I used a small brush to hand paint each letter.

step 11 | The Wood Grain Cottage

It really didn’t take that long!

I tried to make sure and paint as close to the pencil outline as possible, but there were still a few areas where you could see the pencil marks…

step 12 | The Wood Grain Cottage

I used an eraser and erased over the entire word….

step 13 | The Wood Grain Cottage

I did that to the rest of them, and they were done!

I seriously contemplated sealing them with something, but I think they will only look better as they age outside. Plus, they’re so easy to make, I don’t mind touching them up every now and then.

  1. They look great! That’s for the tip on transferring, I was just going to stencil or paint freehand, but I like that. I am using paint stirrers, because I’m a painter, and that’s what I have on hand. Wow , your garden is huge and looks beautiful!

    1. THANK YOU Linda! The chalk transfer works pretty great- definitely try it! 🙂
Paint stirrers should work! I use what I have on hand all the time too!
      Have a great weekend!

  2. How are they holding up in the sun? The marker stakes I’ve made with plastic markers and permanent marker fade out totally until I cannot read them at all…. plus they are just way too small. So I am very intrigued with your stakes. I may not get them done this summer but might be a great early spring project. Thank you!

    1. Hi Lorri! So far so good with the plant stakes! The stakes are made for outdoor use, so if they weather I am totally fine with it. The paint should hold up ok too.. I mixed in some outdoor paint into the color mixture. We’ll see. If they don’t make it a full year, I can always touch them up for next year. 🙂
      Have a great weekend!
