Thrift Store Headboard & Footboard
I seriously cannot contain my excitement for my latest thrift store find…. Eeee!
On a spur of the moment decision, I stopped by our local thrift store. I scoped out the downstairs and then made my way upstairs (YES, our thrift store does have 2 floors… AND I live in a small town…?!). I had just rounded the corner from the book section and walked right into a whole bunch of brass headboards.
Immediately, my heart started beating overly fast!
You see, I’ve had my heart set on this certain headboard for awhile now. It’s from Pottery Barn (shocker), but the price was waaay out of my budget…
But in that huge pile of headboards, was the one… And it just happened to be the ONLY ONE with the matching footboard. And, it was a queen.
You know where I’m going with this, right?
$35 later I floated out of that thrift store on a cloud. It was wonderful.
I continued to float my cloud straight to the hardware store where I picked up 4 cans of oil rubbed bronze spray paint.

You’d never know that it wasn’t from a big store, like Pottery Barn.
I tell ya, that spray paint is amazing stuff.
I was so excited to show you, that I haven’t even attached it to our bed frame yet, or talked to the hubby about building some extension legs to make the headboard taller.
We’ve got to do a little bed switchero and grab the queen from the guest bedroom and move the full from the master bedroom back to the guest bedroom.
In the mean time it’s just propped up against the wall and bed… obviously I moved it when we went to sleep, but you better believe I put it right back in place the next morning.
And then my heart started beating fast again… You know, because I hadn’t seen it all night. I woke up and it was even prettier than I remembered.
😉
And then I hopped back on my cloud…
P.S.- Now I’m on the hunt for a few new bedding items… 🙂

What color and brand is the spray paint? I want to paint my brass head and footboard is that flat black? thanks it looks awesome……
It looks great!!!! I used to have one of those but California King in the late 70’s and early 80’s……loved it!! But I agree, what you did to it makes it look real pretty!!! And expensive!! Good job!!

Wow…thrift store find of the year! I seriously can’t even believe that price! I have one (very similar to the PB one) that belonged to my Grandma (and her mom before her)! This will turn into a family heirloom! 🙂

ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS !!!! I’m in my mid-60’s and I’ve always loved repurposing furniture. Buying new just isn’t my thing and of course, the money savings is always so enticing !!! My hubby and I started our marriage 42 years ago with hand-me-down furniture and through the years we’ve furnished our home with garage sale, estate sale and thrift store finds !!! You are truly an inspiration to all !! Keep up the good work.

Hubby and I have always preferred “character and interest” in our home furnishings rather than have the place look like a department store layout !!! Anyway, it’s more fun to repurpose. I’ve been sitting here planning our track of garage sales for this weekend !! We’re always looking for something fun. We’ve even help furnish our children’s homes with garage sale finds. I applaud you for all your great ideas and hard work. It’s easy to just run into a store and buy something new but it takes a great imagination to see how things can be repurposed. I truly admire your talents.

I can’t believe I haven’t found your blog until now! LOVE this makeover!! Did you prime before spraypainting? How did the paint take to the lacquered brass??? I’m kicking myself for getting rid of a bedframe like this, never thought paint would stick to that brass…

Was just wondering if there are any tricks or special advice you would give about doing this I have a brass headboard and footboard just like this and want mine to look like yours 🙂
Hi Katrie! You’re so lucky to have this headboard and footboard! I just love it! Honestly, mine has held up wonderfully! If I were to do one thing differently, it would be to spray it with a light clear top coat once the spray paint dried. I would also let it “cure” for a few days in the garage before bringing it inside and using it. Mine suffered a few small scratches at first, but since then, I think the paint has hardened. I hope that helps! 😀

Ours has held up wonderfully! No scratches, other than when I first put it in our bedroom. Even those are minor, but if I were to do it again (which I totally would), I would wait at least a week after it’s sprayed before moving it in. I hope that helps! 🙂
What spray paint did you use? I have similar bed frame that I want to do the same thing to it’s brass as well with white and I’m trying to modernize it. I’ll post pic after it’s finished.

I found it because I was looking to see what other people have done with painting brass beds. The bed I have found is almost exactly like yours! I’m wondering…did you ever add extensions to the headboard to raise it up higher? If so, would you mind sharing what you did? I was thinking metal conduit pipe pieces to add to it, but we can’t come up with a good idea for attaching leg extensions…Please help!
