Recently I came across several amazing posts by Darlene at Fieldstone Hill. After reading about the importance of finding and creating my own signature style, I was inspired to do just that.
I found it a little ironic that I stumbled upon her site. Lately, I’ve been working on distinguishing my style and she provided so many excellent tips to get started.
We all know that sources of inspiration are everywhere. From magazines, to Pinterest and blogs, there are so many great ways to get inspired. While this is wonderful thing, I find that it can leave me a little bit confused with what I really like. In order to create my signature style, I had to identify what I really loved and would bring into my own home, as opposed to styles that caught my attention but didn’t reflect who we are.
After much debate, I was able to weed through my Pinterest boards and pick images that portrayed styles I wanted to incorporate into our home. Styles that spoke to me.
Once I had picked those images, my goal was to find similar characteristics that repeated themselves. What I found didn’t necessarily shock me, because I have been consistently choosing certain styles, but it did however, help me to solidify and acknowledge my signature style.
Here’s my signature style board:

Once I had it narrowed down to these images, I started to look at common characteristics and traits. Then, I started listing specific words that described my signature style.
Words like: comforting, sophisticated, textured, orderly & organized, classic, traditional, airy, welcoming & homey, industrial, wood grain, neutral, kid friendly.
Now, when I head out the door to find something for our home, I can ask myself if a particular item fits into my style vocabulary. If it doesn’t, then it probably won’t be the right thing for our home. I already feel more confident!
Honestly, I can say that we did pretty good when we were building our home. I tried really hard not to get caught up in trends or become swayed by pretty images rather than picking out what I liked in the pictures. But one thing that I can tell you, there are a few rooms that will be repainted to help create a cohesive flow for our house. And luckily, it’s just paint!
I’m more excited than ever to start creating and showing you my signature style- it will make our home feel that much better!
